Jonesey
I have a cat in the neighbourhood that sits 15yards away and stares at the chickens coop, The chickens are in an enclosed fenced off area and I believe it would provve difficult for outside preditors to get in. However, cats are persistant and last night I looked through the window and spotted this cat by the fence looking for a gap to get under. I dont want to wake up with feathers all over thr ground and no chickens, is there a detorant I can use to stop this cat from entering or going near the pen? clucker1
Watering can. One or two splashes of this, they should get the message. Or hosepipe??? but I haven't had to resort to this as the watering can worked.
Luvachicken
Definitely the hosepipe or cup of water thrown right at it. Or you could try used tea bags with olbas oil or WD40 put on, but you'd need to top up the smell daily if it keeps raining.
Hayleybug
apparently cats arent supposed to like citrus smells so maybe you could soak a couple of plant pots with citronella (as with the fly deterrent discussions on here during the summer!) and place them strategically? definitely would second the spray with a hose aswell. my cat would hate that and im sure it would put her off trying again. BuryFCA1
Are cats a danger to chickens? I have noticed a few cats always hanging around my girls but never considered them to be a danger
Olly
Most hens will see off a cat without any hesitation. If you had chicks or bantams it might be different but a cat is usually deterred by a cross chicken at full squawk.
Jenthelibrarian
I have hens and a cat. When we first got the chooks the cat was fascinated to the point of obsession and spent long hours having staring matches through the wire. He soon came home with a pecked nose. Hens: 1 Cat: 0 Once they started FR-ng we started keeping a high-pressure water pistol at each end of the garden. For a while he seemed unable to help himself stalking them and giving chase, but they really do give as good as they get. The cat is now quite scared of the hens, poor thing FWIW, my neighbours regularly report seeing foxes, and have kindly rung me to report them out and about. Although we hear them they don't seem to come into our garden, and I wonder if a slightly agressive cat [or possibly his wee/poops, although he is neutered] is a deterrent
charly1979
We have a young Ginger Tom that keeps eying my girls up ! Often here the Hubby scaring him off. Id like to think my girls will give him what for I know if Tullah was still with us she would and she would have been very vocal about it too ! Always remember her giving our cat Eyore (the one in my profile pic) getting a mouthful when she dared to put her head in the chicken house ! Ive never seen her run so fast it was a LMAO moment and it took Tullah about half an hour to shut up after the event .. (Oh how I miss my Tullah ) Anyway back to the cat situation a decent supersoaker kept by the back door may be a solution gives you more time to get it esp if you have one with a good range
