SMILING-UPDATE 11/03 Biology Year placements-help please...

Recommended Posts

As some of you know I'm currently studying for a biology degree and am hoping to carry out a year placement as part of my degree

If this is offered as an option for your course doesn't your University help you arrange it ?

When I was a Physics lecturer, our students had the option of a work placement year (between years 2 and 3) and it was our job to make sure everyone got a suitable (paid) JOB. (Suitable work placement years were an attractive 'selling' feature of the courses - some students went on to work for the same companies after graduation)

I'm sure you don't want to get 'legal' but might be worth discussing with your tutor in a 'friendly' way ?

Also, do you know any of the students in the year(s) above you who have had suitable placements that you could ask ?

Good Luck, H

Quick update...

Still haven't heard back from The Genome Analysis Centre yet unfortunately-but that does at least mean the answer isn't no yet!

Had an interview at PGRO, but unfortunately that's a no go, as I can't drive and can't afford to learn to in time to start working for them...

On a positive note though, I've made it down to the final 6 for the 2 positions on offer at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the interview is in a week and a half-I'm liking the odds for this one!

Some, please can you all keep me in your thoughts over the next few weeks, as I really hope something comes of one of them, having worked so hard to even get to this stage.

Ah that's a shame that PGRO didn't work out for you. Every time I have driven past I wondered how you got on. Is there not somewhere nearby you could stay and then get a bus/taxi there? If they've offered you a placement then it seems such a shame to pass it by given how much hard work you've put into finding somewhere to work.

Not really-logistically it was a bit of a nightmare, as to get there I'd have to cross the A19, and cycling it would be really dangerous. Plus they might have occasionally wanted me to drive the tractor or machinery down the road to the next field...which obviously, as I don't have a driving license isn't possible. They were really kind though, and are willing to give me help with my dissertation for my final year if I need it!

Yes, it's a bit of a nuisance that it's located right on the A1 isn't it? Still, that's good news that they are willing to help you with your dissertation, at least it hasn't been a wasted contact.

Well, I had my interview at the National Botanic Garden of Wales yesterday, and I think it went quite well. There were three of us being interviewed yesterday and another three are being interviewed next Monday. I really was spoiled with the weather, as it was gorgeously sunny and the place looked absolutely beautiful. I'll find out late next week whether I'm successful or not, so fingers crossed...

Also, a big thank you to LisaP for putting me up for the night. It was lovely to meet you and all your animals and it was a novel experience having lambs nuzzle up again my ankles whilst eating dinner! :D:lol:
