shredded paper for the nest box?

Recommended Posts

I used shredded paper exclusive;y, and found it to be brilliant... never had any problems.

We work from home a lot and this means we have loads of shredded paper. Our shredder makes those long thin strips, and the birds used to have the luxury of sleeping on confidential information but I never used shredded newspaper, as it just put ink everywhere.

I had great plans to use shredded paper in the Cube, as I've got an endless supply of it ... trouble is, the chucks had a super time digging around in it and kicking it everywhere - all over the garden, so I stopped using it  I also tended to find it went a bit soggy, so wasn't as good to use as rapasorb (chopped rape straw that I usually use).

I use shredded paper, but long shreds, not cross-cut shreds.

Recycles the junk mail/confidential waste/holiday brochures with pix of sunshine  , and old Argos catalogues particularly make nice soft shreds :D . A couple of sheets of tv magazine or similar on the bottom of the cube nestbox will stop it falling through the ventilation hole and make it easy to roll up as a parcel when cleaning out.

This is what we have used for years! As regards any soggy paper, well it's so easy to change often - as it's free - soggy paper isn't an issue for us. In the wooden coops, we put a layer of easi bed, then the shredding on the top in the nest areas. I really don't like straw! I only ever used straw in the very beginning of chicken keeping, as I was none the wiser. In the cube, I put a few layers of folded newspaper before I put the shredded paper in the nest box. This is only because Spongebob stands on the wheel & pulls the shedding through the slit of the nestbox. :shameonu: Naughty!

Does anyone else not use anything in the nest box? I used to put stuff in there, but I was afraid it was encouraging my Black Star to be broody. Now I don't think it matters, she's probably going to be broody regardless, but since I took all the nesting material out to discourage her from sitting, it was easier to not go back to filling it again and having to clean out the dirty stuff. The eggs don't seem to get broken.
