Charlottechicken
He of the mad white hair, Black Country accent and colourful jumpers, has died at the age of 66. I am sure his appearance and enthusiasm for archaeology helped make Time Team as popular as it is. RIP
Valkyrie
Crikey - that's young! I saw him when they came to do a dig at Old Basing. RIP.
Mrs Webmuppet
Time team is one of my favourite programmes (and one of Little Miss Webmuppets) . A sad day for archeology. Will they bury him with objects to confuse the hell out of future archeologists?
kissinuk
RIP Mick, a great man (and fellow vegetarian). Used to love watching Mick & Phil on TT.
The Dogmother
Yes, a real shame that he was taken so young.
C&T
Was also sad to hear this - his jumpers were fantastic!
soapdragon
That's so sad and no age at all . He was a truly inspirational chap and will be such a loss to his field. Winter Sunday evenings were always spent in front of Time Team and OH and I have enjoyed watching all the re runs on More 4 (or whatever!) since and are always delighted when we come across one that we hadn't previously seen!! I was fortunate enough to attend a small lecture that he gave about 10 years ago and he was a great communicator, approachable and passionate about his subject - he signed a copy of his book for me and was so lovely. Feeling genuinely upset about his very sad and early death.
WitchHazel
Such a lovely man, and one of the reasons I like(d) to watch Time Team. Very envious of you,Soapdragon. I can imagine that he was an excellent & interesting speaker.
newcountrygirl
Sad to hear this news. He was one of the reasons I used to like Time Team.
ubereglu
I heard about this from my brother the other day, I too am saddened. He did an awful lot of things for Somerset County history too, and my brother has been using his papers and research recently too in his job at Victoria County Histories. I also remember his wonderful stripey jumpers and how he was a supporter of Save the Children, as he had written into Simply Knitting many years ago asking for viewers to no longer send him stripey jumpers, but instead help in the efforts to knit blankets to send them out to people who really needed them. soapdragon
Mick regularly used to wear t shirts emblazoned with the SightSavers logo so I assume he was involved with this charity too?! The story of how Time Team came about and how he got to know Tony Robinson is one of those 'million to one chances happen 9 times out of 10' - as Terry Pratchett famously said! A very modest but brilliant chap - 66 seems so young.
