libby22
Definitely! Where else do you have a huge group of people with the same interest, loads of sound knowledge and new ideas and sympathy when it is needed - wouldn't be without it

PoachedPlease
No ones mentioned cost yet! I mean the charges vets make. I know they have to make a living but the cost of simple things like vaccinations for my cat are up to £100 a pop, so I'm guessing chicken issues won't be cheap. How do those with low incomes afford to have pets at all? How much was your last vet visit? Xx
merlina
there was a question in the survey about cost, but it asked a blanket 'how much would you spend'. But the answer is surely relative to the problem the chicken has and the likely outcome. Same for the question about clinics/get-togethers - it's all about value, not just a bald number. I've recently spent £60 for a consultation which was precisely zero use and, it transpired, for drugs which were useless. That I very much begrudge. The same amount for something which saved a hen from illness or worse would be worth every penny

Chortle Chook
I'm having a bit of a run on vets at the moment Today it was the turn of a recently purchased Poland to pop to my excellent Goring vet. Her eye was all closed up and very puffy. I noticed it because I was doing my weekly Poland head lice check. Off she went to the vet who has done an amazing operation on her with local anasthetic, turning her eye inside out and extracting all sorts of stuff that it seems she came here with It has cost £50 for the op, some eye ointment and some spot on for my other 9 chickens. The little Poland is now recovering but looks perkier already so I think it has been worth it. She must have been in so much discomfort I'm now thinking that keeping my 10 chickens in fine fettle is working out rather expensive but if I can't afford their vet care then I really should not be keeping them at all. I'll probably be downscaling by not replacing chooks that pass on and, frankly, with the costs of all vet care, I'll be doing the same when my dear dogs pass on. PoachedPlease
Merlin a if there was a 'like' button I would so like your last post! That is exactly how I feel but the questions on the survey didn't phrase well enough for me to say what I felt. I am SOOOOreluctant to go to the vets because they just don't have the experience and will prob 9/10 fob me off with antibiotics. Well that's what it seems like from the posts that come from Internet forums. Where is James Heriot when you need him? Xx

The 3 hens I have taken have all been given speculative antibiotics but ended up bring PTS anyway. As harsh as it sounds... I am afraid I can do that myself at home for free... blueandwhite
Done. I paid £30 in the Summer for a consultation with vet. The vet wasn't sure what was wrong or if treatment would work and as I felt my girl was suffering made heart wrenching decision to have her PTS. The vet could not have been more sympathetic, or the reception staff. The vet asked if I wanted to stay with her but I couldn't face it and she assured me a member of staff would comfort her to the end - gulp. The £30 included cremation. The vet also said she was off on a residential 'chicken awareness/keeping course' in Devon the next week. So I would definately go back to her now. Redwing
I've done the survey I am lucky enough to have an amazing poultry experienced vet who I have no hesitation in taking a bird to BUT (and this will sound ruthless) its all to do with the value of the bird (moneywise or value to breeding group) However I would do all I could to help a pet bird at home if I felt the condition was curable
