Luvachicken
Wow, I didn't know chickens could live as long as that. Well done on keeping her to a good old age
Sheilaz
Thank you all for your kind responses, I'd mainly posted as a personal record, it was a pleasant surprise to read your replies. It does feel like the end of an era, Chuckles had seen many companions come and go. At one time my flock totalled 11, and now I have just three hens. Two were bought about 4 years ago, the other was adopted and is about 3, my chicken keeping days are numbered. Chuckles was always of a "matronly" build, but always sweet and gentle and way down the pecking order until more recent times. Latterly she had become Mother Hen, always vocal in greeting me and telling the others where the food was and watching over them. I think it would be good to let Omlet know about Chuckles, would someone be clever and link this topic to them please (I'm still hopeless at links). She was the main one I spoke to and her gentle coos and chuckles (my daughter named her accordingly) sounded like sentences, so I'll miss those conversations, but happy days

Leicester_H
Chuckles was one of my original Omlet pair, delivered 9 years ago! I'll miss her. What breed was she ? I have a 7 YO Mrs Pepperpot. I'm bringing her into the utility room at night to keep warm as she's on her own (she can see 6 ex-bats from her outside run during the day - but they don't get on !) I'd love her to make 9 YO. Sheilaz
Yes, Chuckles was a Mrs.Pepperpot. How lovely to hear about your 7 year old, H. They're rather special birds aren't they?
Leicester_H
Yes - they are 'special girls' - well worth the little extra pampering she needs (?)/gets - especially in winter. Fingers crossed she will beat Chuckles 'record' old age. She seems in good health, nice feathers - just been dust bathing under our Bay tree. Her legs seem a bit 'creaky' at times - but today she was throwing soil everywhere - so I think, like people, she has good days (when you'd never guess her age) and less good days. She does try to pick fights with the 'new' exbat girls through the mesh - she has a lot of 'spirit'!! H
