Couperman
Have you ever wondered why coffee smells stronger when you first open the jar!! Or why Terry's chocalate orange smell so nice when you open one! There is a small chemical plant next door to our office that speciallises in producing aroma's. These smells are inpregnated into the packaging to make products seem 'fresh' when you first open them. I spoke to a guy I used to work with years ago who has also worked at this place. I was shocked but somehow not suprised that this sort of thing goes on!! Kev.
One Man Banned
I know they used to make scents that were billowed out at supermarket entrances, the smell of fresh baked bread and the like even tho' the bakery's at the back of the store usually. All a lovely ploy to make us feel warm and fuzzy (who doesn't like the smell of bread being baked ) and spend lots more money!! Didn't realise it could be put into packaging tho - I thought it was because our noses adjust to the smell that it's not that strong after first exposure, but if they're loading them with chemicals.......... Hmnnn A xx
starboyhull
i didnt realise they did that, but not a surprise really.....
Couperman
apparently the coffee smell is painted onto the undeside of the seal so that when you break it the jars smells of super fresh coffee. Rather than wel ....... coffee. Kev.
Egluntyne
Good heavens! I know you are supposed to put a few drops of vanilla extract on a baking sheet in a warm oven when showing prospective buyers around your house!
Laura & CTB
The company I work for also makes these aroma gases. There is also a "fresh baby smell" for the likes of Boots and Mothercare. My fave is "Christmas" - a spicy mulled wine kinda scent that gets wafted through shopping centres at that time of year

A xx When I was pregnant the smell of bread baking in the bread maker turned my stomach so much I had to stop using it. There is still some memory trigger there that stops me using the breadmaker because of the smell.
Karen & co.
I didn't realise that but then again smells good and bad trigger memories in all of us karen x
Jules.
Smells can bring back memories & emotions in a flash! My favourite smell is that of clean washing, when were in Keswick last week every day we walked past a laundrette & I amused my friend by inhaling the smell of washing powder & fabric conditioner deeply as we passed. I have a Yankee Candle with the fragrance "Clean cotton" in my bedroom. & the same in an air freshener in our car. If there was a perfume that smelled of clean washing I would buy it- anyone know of one?!

redfrock
there is one particular perfume (Eden) that makes me want to be violently sick ... all because a (soon to be) ex came home reeking of it .... (now I look back she is welcome to him) - this will be the same guy who when I came home from uni had changed the locks and this woman answered the door and said 'oh you used to be the lodger didn't you' Unfortunatley just over 10 years on and it still has the same effect. One of the girls at the office started wearing the same perfume and thankfully because she is my friend I was able to have a word with her and she stopped using it But I digress (as per usual!) - isn't it sad all these marketing ploys they use? It suggests they have very little faith in their products - after all if you have bought it you are going to at least try it - so surely impregnating the packet is pointless? Egluntyne
My daughter was given some Anais Anais perfume once....the smell was absolutely vile and made me retch.........and Red Door is the same. I sat next to a lady at a dinner recently and she was wearing it......it made me feel really ill which was a pity as she was a pleasant lady and the food would have been nice. Both these perfumes have a nasty metallic undertone to me.....and it is not that I just don't like them....they really do make me feel ill. New West is another one. I suppose the perfumiers among you will be able to tell us which essential oil or whatever is in these so that I can avoid them in future. Christian
If there was a perfume that smelled of clean washing I would buy it- anyone know of one?! How about dabbing an aerial liquitab behind each ear? I love the clean cotton candle from Yankee. I have just found the tea lights too!! Have one on every room! Cinnamon
That is really interesting - who doesn't sniff at a newly opened coffee jar & go "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm"? I cannot abide the smell of the perfume Poison - makes me retch....just vile. I was at a reasturant once & a woman came in with it on.It was such an overpowering stench that we had to leave, & another couple did too Fave smells : Laundry fresh from the line, Baking Bread, Cinnamon (natch), Bonfire Smoke, Ambre Solaire sun oil,...............I could go on & on. One of my most favourite companies is Demeter, who are based in the US. They make natural fragrances, & by that I mean the smells are of natural things like Gin & Tonic, Baby Powder, Rain, Crayon, Christmas tree & Baking bread. They REALLY smell like the things they are supposed to. I wear Gin & Tonic a lot If there was a perfume that smelled of clean washing I would buy it- anyone know of one?! Jules, Demeter "Laundromat" would be perfect for you. I have tried it & its exactly that Launderette smell. Its one of their best sellers too http://www.demeterfragrance.com/

craftyhunnypie
I can't stand the smell of Body Shops 'White Musk' - now that makes me feel sick! I think it's because where I used to work a woman wore it to cover up the smell of her B.O. The two mixed together sent out a smell like public loos cleaned with cheap disinfectant and sprayed with cheap air freshener! I knew about the smell enhancers as I trained as a Food Scientist at Uni - hence I have never worked in that field! Ha ha I didn't fancy doing shift work all the time and wearing a hairnet! The food industry is shocking! I remember at college making green ice cream - everyone was expecting mint as a smell enhancer was used, but it actually tasted of lime! But because your brain had smelt the mint, it was absolutely revolting! Emma.x

Guest
When I was 11 my Mum went into hospital for a few days to have an operation. The few days turned into a month as she had a post operative infection and the operation hadn't gone quite right (I understand to this day this operation is still very hit and miss!). Whilst she was in hospital she used an entire bottle of Rive Gauche perfume. To this day if someone walks past wearing this perfume my mind immediatly thinks of hospitals.
