The Dogmother
The worst pong has to be dead mouse!!! It slowly develops and escalates until it makes you gag and you just have to find the mouse that the cats brought in and then abandoned under some furniture. Olly
this has been really useful - I was interested to read the post, as I've never had a smelly washing machine, but then I NEVER use concentrates and never use fabric conditioner, it really sounds as if there is a connection, from the other posts on here. I do have sensitive skin and tend to use non-bio powders (although I don't find Ecover works too well) but also I believe fabric conditioner is a big con - I don't like the idea of coating my clothes in chemicals and artificial scents. We are constantly sold the idea that we need air-fresheners, ironing sprays, etc. - nothing smells as good as something dried outdoors on a washing-line! However it would be nice to have the towels a bit softer, I love the white wine vinegar tip, I will give that a try!
Louise
It is just white vinegar Snowy no need to buy expensive stuff I buy it in 5 litre containers
Dancing Gal
Popped out and got a bottle of white vinegar last night. If it works I shall have to get a big gallon plastic bottle - hopefully aldi or lidl will have a nice cheap brand to pick up. My washing machine must be around 15 years old and works fine except for the smell. We thought we were going to have to change it which is a shame as technically it's sound. It's only had this horrible pong for the past few months - I think these concentrated cleaners and fab conditioners may be to blame. Never had a problem in the old days when we used the big packet of non concentrated stuff.
Snowy
Littlest boy had a 'wee' accident last night, so I've just washed his sheets. normally do them on a 60 wash with powder and no fabric conditioner. I put some vinegar in with this lot - just waiting for it to finish to see what they're like!

Guest
Louise, I could kiss you! The smell of fabric conditioner has been really turning my stomach the past few weeks, and the towels especially are like cardboard without it, so I've been still using it and retching everytime I use a towel . I've just done a load of towels with vinegar instead, and am dleighted with the result! Cheers dearie - you're a star!! And, no - they don't smell of vinegar on the line! Louise
Happy to be of help Fabric conditioner is just a blend of waxes, oils and fragrance who wants that on their washing It also stops towels absorbing water but vinegar doesn't

Jules.
I tell my mum all the tips that you give on here, she thinks they are really fab & common sense ( and she also thinks that you all sound like Womens Institute ladies or country farmers wives with your home made crafts & cooking ideas). I tell her that you are all modern, forward thinking people.

Snowy
Well it worked a treat on my little ones bedding - just nicely soft; lovely and clean smelling. Not a hint of vinegar. I'm converted!
Dancing Gal
Excellent - I left a wash of towels in and used vinegar for the final rinse. I shall see how they are when they dry but it's looking good so far.
