mullethunter
Bernadette is driving me mad! She's wandering around the garden screeching her head off. Must be annoying the neighbours (although their dog barking ALL day when I was working from home last week annoyed me). I think it's because she wants to lay her egg but there's either someone else in the nest box or the Wyandottes keep chucking her out just because they can. Does this sound likely, and if it is the reason what can I do about it?
Charlottechicken
I feel your pain I think you are right with the wanting to lay business. Lola, my Araucana bantam, screeches when she wants to come out, screeches when she wants to lay an egg, and screeches when she is out and wants to lay an egg and doesn't want to go back in and miss out on being out Basically, she is a noisy little madam, and has been since she hatched. I've learnt to put up with it but she seems to have a lot of volume for such a little bird!
Cat tails
Ginger is a screecher too. Especially in the early morning in the coop to be let out and when just let out and they finished their breakfast of endive and corn. It takes a lot to keep ignoring it, but if I pop my head out to make her shut up, she will just keep doing it for the attention. I now just shut my bedroom window (which is on the first floor on the garden side) to get a few more minutes of sleep, since they wake up at 7 now. gavclojak
It sounds like it's likely as I think you have already sussed! In not sure what set up you have but any chance of adding an extra nest box or a very small rabbit hutch so she can lay in peace? It's so stressful when all you can hear is them screaming isn't it! PixieDust
Lily is the screeches and very vocal in this flock. Winnie just chatters all the time and Pixie is very quiet. Lily's noise is generally egg laying related.
mimi5
Well, I'm afraid in my 3 &1/2 years of keeping pekins, I have found that some are very vocal and it's part of their personality Tilly my silver partridge was just as you describe So was her daughter Penny Mine always hate sharing the cube nest box I have tried to divide it and pleeded with omlet to make a divider all to no avail So maybe as suggested some other place to lay? It should also settle down with her maturing and settling into laying Pekins are fiesty madams But I kinda like that Hopefully I'll be having this problem again next year.........if I get some cute girl fluffies My current 2 have had the cube and the classic to use

mullethunter
Don't 'not get Pekins' Alis girls - they're the funniest little things and Shelley isn't noisy. Thank you all for your replies. Maybe when (if ) we move I'll try to arrange a second place for egg laying and see if that helps. I love her to bits but blimey is she loud

The Dogmother
I read the title of this thread and thought 'because that's what they do' Pekins are generally gobby little Madams who like to shriek like a seagull given half a chance - a squirt of water usually stops them in their tracks
miller30
Yep sounds like she needs to lay an egg bit like my place today lol I would chuck the dottes out and shut her in her house which is what I do if I'm around she should then happily lay her egg I felt like leaving home today with all the moaning and crowing going on leanne

Valkyrie
Ah the joy of spring and nest box wars! I left the eglu out so that they'd have a choice, but they all wanted the cube. Not quite so bad considering the fussiest was the buff Sussex and she is no longer laying. Neither is the old pekin. One of my pekins never announced and she'd lay wherever she felt like. But she went and left me with Skye and Mini who did announce. Now I just have Skye and she announces pretty much for everyone - she'd even continue if I gave her treats - that rule don't speak with your mouth full never applied to her. She had her list of things to say and she'd carry on until the last line had been read. Although the Silkie was the loudest. My big girls don't make a noise now. The new maran did but not any more. I expect the others have had an influence there. But pekins have that droopy drawers funny waddle - I laugh every time I see Skye zipping along like a youngster! Luvachicken
I read the title of this thread and thought 'because that's what they do' Pekins are generally gobby little Madams who like to shriek like a seagull given half a chance - a squirt of water usually stops them in their tracks That's what two of my new ones -Tilly and Polly sound like fortunately they don't do it all day long. And then they moan quite a lot all day too. My other pekins were never like that
