kissinuk
Before we go off and start looking for 3 new girls (our last died before christmas) does anyone have any recommendations around Northants? Hoping to get 1 Orpington & 2 hybrids, I have just phoned Cotswold Chickens and they do have some in stock, so they are an option. Unfortunately Mini Meadows don't have any orps yet and our last supplier, Heidi's Happy Hens no longer exist. Any other recommendations in the area (ideally within 1.5 hours of North Northants)? Valkyrie
Redwing will know who is in the area.
Purplemaniacs
Yes Redwing will know. Brackley does a rehoming for ex batts, I got my three from there, if you fancied giving some girls a new life. Not sure about the Orpington though. I bought hybrids from Merrydale near Leicester but they don't exist anymore. I hadn't realised Heidi's Happy Hens had closed too. Good luck I hope you find somewhere near you. Chrissie
Egg_x
We are based in Leicester and when we were considering getting some hens (the bug to get them in back hence me being here!) Mini Meadows & Merrydale were all I could find. As has been mentioned though Merrydale seemed to suddenly shut down One other place we looked, however might be a little out of the way, was Sunnyside Poultry in Burton on Trent, Derbyshire. kissinuk
Thanks! We ended up making the trip to Cotswolds and bought an Orp, Goldline and Daisybell (reverse Sussex). WIR coming soon now that Omlet have reduced the prices!
Purplemaniacs
What lovely looking girls. Do you live in Northants as you were asking about breeders? Chrissie
mullethunter
Just what you wanted The orp looks like a giant
kissinuk
What lovely looking girls. Do you live in Northants as you were asking about breeders? Chrissie Yes, we live in North Northants. We used to be customers of Heidis but they sold up just over a year ago (I think to Warwickshire Chicken Coops). Was a bit of a trek to Cotswolds but worth it, they have a great setup, very clean and heathy looking girls. Really wanted an Orp for a long time and her size makes a great excuse to get that WIR I've wanted for ages I did try to find local breeders for the Orp but didn't have any luck. The Dogmother
I came to this thread a bit late I'm afraid - Cotswold Chickens usually has some pure breeds in stock, and can order in more especially for you. They have some lovely black orps at the moment
Valkyrie
Oooh lovely. I have a soft spot for orpies. Lalala not looking - well I peeked between fingers. Gorgeous birds.
kissinuk
The Orp is being a bit of a bully, pecking the others with her huge beak (she's about 7 weeks older than the others). WIR ordered though and some new fence netting arrived today, so hopefully the extra room & some free ranging will help. Her name was "Flump" but if she carries on I may rename her "Vader"... In good news the little Goldline ate corn from my hand today, for such a young hen she is very tame!
The Dogmother
Try stringing up some greens, just out of reach and make them work for it; that ought to keep her occupied It sounds like part of the settling in/establishing pecking order procedure to me, but keep an eye that she doesn't get too heavy handed. I'm not too far away, so shout if you have any problems.
kissinuk
Thanks Dogmother I'm sure you are right, we went through this last time round too a few years ago. Off to a Welland Valley feeds tomorrow anyway, so will pick up some anti-peck spray as a deterrent.
The Dogmother
Good idea If you have any Citronella oil, dilute that in some water and try spraying with that - they don't much like it.
