The Dogmother
That is amazing J :) Been a nice day here, and I have been out all day as Rosie is back for a long weekend. Beautifully sunny and crisp morning, so we got the dogs out for a good run up by the windpump on Bodicote Hill. We've spent the afternoon driving about after a lovely wholefood lunch at The Straw Kitchen in Whichford. Madam has just started 3rd year of 4 and has decided to switch her emphasis from molecular genetics, which ended up being rather tedious.... "so done with that mum". She's now really enjoying zoology and marine biology, so a complete return to where she started from! She'll probably end up doing something similar to MH
Valkyrie
Lovely view MH. It's been a case of if it's dry then outside quick - it's mostly been pants. Our electricity that has been generated in October is 30% less than last year! It's been so dark and with the time change it's been like jet lag this time round. The rain is still lashing at the windows and we had over an inch in one day this week. I've forgotten to empty the gauge yesterday so it'll probably be overflowing now! Amber warning for wind from 4am to 4pm. Nice that they are so precise with their timing. The chickens are getting webbed feet. Even the ducks are fed up with the rain and that's saying something!
soapdragon
Just got home from a few days in Jersey with the boys and OH............wet and the Jersey news said that Wednesday was the 4th wettest day on record - doh! Drove off the ferry in Poole at 11.30pm last night to pouring rain and 2 and a bit hours home in the wet! Heyho!
Valkyrie
Yuk, hope the ferry was pretty calm and not too choppy! We had no wind at all yesterday - but had fog all day, eased off a little at about 8 - could see the lights down the hill, but when I went to bed the fog had returned. OH said it was still foggy this morning (and yes it rained in the night here too). Wind is picking up outside already!
Beantree
Very windy overnight and this morning with heavy showers, so it's pretty miserable for chickens even though the temperature is 15C. Just been into the garage to find our four free-rangers clustered in a corner quietly preening and hoping not to be spotted and shoo'd out. Don't mind them being in there but they do leave 'presents' which I have an annoying habit of not seeing and stepping on. Set for a lot of rain for the next few days so, with the clay soil turned to slush, no gardening in the foreseeable future.
soapdragon
Not actually raining but just grey and so dark all day....really quite depressing OOps, I lied! Just looked out of the window and it is drizzling.......eugh. Edited November 3, 2019 by soapdragon
The Dogmother
OK, so we need to have less wet - the water table here is so high that there are springs bubbling up in the fields. Torrential rain and gales here yesterday until lunchtime, not too bad in the afternoon. After a gloomy start, today has been lovely - walked the dogs in warm sunshine and then sat out with a cuppa; one of those days when you make the most of it because you don't know how many more we will get before Christmas. soapdragon
Can't get the hang of it! Early November and I was out in the garden late this afternoon raking leaves wearing just a t shirt, leggings and crocs (NOT my bestest look but our neighbours are made of stern stuff!) and not feeling in the least bit cold at all......but agree about the wet, DM. Standing water everywhere and saturated ground making digging impossible....so I haven't
mullethunter
Just wet. Every day. Had enough of it. Rivers in flood every Saturday. Would really like some cold, dry weather but we’re not forecast any.
Valkyrie
Yesterday was a shock - it was sunny! After a horrible deluge and 60mph winds or thereabouts, we had sun! So was outdoors trying to fix up the tarpaulin on the chicken cage but needed help really. The whole lot needs to come down and be repaired but I can't see that happening with the wet and the wind. Today was also surprising - woke up to clear sky - with clouds on the horizon. It's grey but still sunny, hope it lasts a bit longer. I let the big girls out early yesterday because I was expecting rain, so running free while they could. That meant the little ones could come out and run free too - they never go outside the fencing, but it's fine for the time being - they can run around inside and outside the cage. Had to add more aubiose to keep their footsies dry where the tarps had pulled apart and the rain got in, and woodchips along their pathways. This morning looked OK for them even though we did get the rain in the late afternoon and overnight. I wonder if we'll have a long but dry winter. Or will we still get wet and be knee-deep in snow? Beantree
At last, after 7 days of near continuous rain and cloud, the sun has come out! Cold though. No gardening until the New Year now as the ground, even though it slopes to drain, is a bog.
Valkyrie
It's getting a bit boring now. One day sunshine then paying for it for the rest of the week I gather. At least there isn't any wind - nice to ring some changes then.
Minnie&Moose
Started lovely and sunny and frosty - sheep and chicken water containers were all covered in ice! By 11am I could see the rain approaching across the field and it's been bucketing down ever since ☹️
soapdragon
Same here......bright and crisp until lunchtime and now it's gloomy and overcast (makes me feel the same!)
The Dogmother
Me too - had a dog walk in the pouring rain today - not that they minded too much.
soapdragon
🎼What a difference a day makes 🎵 .......... lovely today with wall to wall sunshine and not cold. Stood for ages around the War Memorial in the village at the Remembrance Day Service and felt really warm in the sun.
mullethunter
Lovely day here although cold in the shade. Raining again now though 🙄
The Dogmother
It has been a glorious day - had a walk in local woodland, which was very muddy, but the colours were amazing. I hear there's another day of rain coming through tomorrow, short-lived I think though.
Valkyrie
Gorgeous day - sun was warm, but there was a chill when it went behind a cloud. I can hear the rain now. One day, that's all we ask! Another one day and then another one day etc - preferably lumped together for a couple of weeks! Was out with just my t-shirt and skirt this morning, and yesterday. Ended up with half an inch of rain overnight. Was an inch and a half the other day - even when Duke decided to slurp from the gauge! Daft duck! Minnie&Moose
Lovely day - managed to clean all chicken houses and start my bulb planting - miniature irises and wood anemones all now in - no doubt the squirrels will be busy digging them up tomorrow just to annoy me! The Dogmother
Would you like me to bring round 2 lurchers to de-squirrel your land? I need to get my bulbs in pretty soon. The soil here is like chocolate mousse in consistency though - it's never been this wet before. I checked out the water levels on the Cherwell when I drove past earlier; it's the highest that I have seen it since they put in the flood defences! I wouldn't be surprised if it breached. Minnie&Moose
Thanks for the offer of the help of the lurcher patrol - but I think Molly might take umbrage - she's had 2 of them this morning and was last seen lurking under a miniature maple tree obviously hoping for a hat trick🙄. We're also very soggy (for us) - and the goldfish pond has never been so full! Living at the top of the hill does have its advantages though - the dip going down into Chippy from us was impressive this morning!
The Dogmother
Yes, I did some brilliant splashing at the weekend, driving down that lane to the windmill walk in Bloxham. Fingers crossed for Molly achieving her hat trick - are you nailing the tails to the gatepost to warn off any new squirrels? !
Minnie&Moose
One of my neighbours is way too squeamish for me to be able to do that. They're regularly spotted carrying in the cheapest of cheap meats but are horrified that we plan to eat our sheep - and I haven't dared tell them where the missing cockerels are
Valkyrie
Thanks for the vision DM - your pups bouncing over the treetops to get the squizzies! Is that a bird? Is it a plane? Nope, it's DM's lurcher and friends! I have an overactive imagination!
