Chortle Chook

Do you have pet chickens?

Recommended Posts

That kitty is sweet Redsunset. Hope he does not object to tassel like things on your Xmas tree. :shameonu:

Thanks everyone for your answers. I was just wondering if the vogue for chickens as pets was passing as lately I have come upon quite a few people who seem to think I am a bit odd for letting my chooks run around my garden when they are well past laying eggs. It also seems to be getting harder to get 'pretty chickens' as opposed to 'good egg layers'. Was beginning to feel a bit on my own :anxious: Don't know if others are finding the same.

Chortle chook, no dangly bits as my Christmas tree is one I bought in woolies many years ago and is only 6" tall! No room in my victoriana country cottage as big old dresser/cast iron stove and three doors in my living room, and too much furniture! Have lots of other nice Christmas decorations tho. Kitty is busy removing the other tassels tonight.......sheesh.

As for pretty non laying chooks, I have a few of those now. Some old hybrids who are prob in retirement mode and a few coming up to point of lay.....spring? I have a buff semi brahma who I suspect is broody (yes in this weather) and if so have to sort her out on Saturday! Noticed the wee lavender leghorns had been turfed out of the broody coop and she is in there.......hmm, no chance at this time of year girl!

Ours are definitely pets. Spoiled rotten too :D

We've only had them for just over 2 years and we wish we'd done it years ago. They are so entertaining and such personalities and they love to "help" when I'm working in the garden. Rhapsody keeps up a running commentary on everything I'm doing and they all chat and chunter away to each other all the time.

They have the run of the whole garden and if we leave the back door open they will come into the kitchen and make a bee line for the cat food - not to be encouraged but hysterically funny when it happens

I was planning to put fairy lights up in the trees and bushes in the garden today - something that they would be very interested in - but it's far too windy and as I don't plan on doing a Mary Poppins, I will leave it till the weather has calmed down.

They will always be pets who live in the garden, named & hugged a lot. Always make me smile when I've had a bad day at the office. Eggs are an extra benefit but not expected. will always take to vets without a second thought when there's an issue with their health. they have been my saviour when i have a black day. :D
