How to know if you've broken your foot ?

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday night last week, my DS fell up the stairs and landed on the top of my foot with his elbow - and his full weight (9 st)

It was pretty painful but I stuck some cold water on it and as it was bedtime, went to bed.

It was quite painful all night and black by the morning.

I've been using Arnica on it as often as I can but it is still quite bruised.

I can wiggle all my toes, bend them up and down and walk on it.

The only thing I can't do is wear shoes because it hurts so much on the top.

I don't want to waste time at the doctors or hospital if there is nothing wrong.

I would love some advice from my Omlet friends especially as I have to go back to work tomorrow.

I'm assuming if it was broken I wouldn't be able to walk on it ?

My lovely school lift share partner went for a walk a few weeks ago (bear with; its all relevant!!!) and stepped into what she thought was a shallow puddle. It wasn't; it was a deep pothole and she 'turned her ankle'. It was very sore though she soldiered on but, after a few days of battling on (still driving, doing housework, working and all the other things a Mum of three does) she decided to get it checked out....... and found she had broken it in two places

So, its perfectly possible to have a 'break' and be unaware! Also there is the 'I don't want to make a fuss, if its nothing' feeling BUT, if you think there is even a small possibility you could have a break, get it checked. If there is an injury then you may be doing further damage by just getting on with things.

Good luck; keep us posted!

My mum soldiered on with painful toes for months and when she finally went to the doctors it turned out they were broken. So yes, I reckon you could have broken it. When she broke her leg two weeks ago she could still move her foot even though the top of her thigh had no solid connection to the rest of her leg!

Go and get it checked!

My mom has broken her matatarsal bones once (don't think I have any knowledge of anatomy... Had to google it) and could walk fine, but it was very sore. Especially stepping of curbs and stairs and such. There is not really anything they do about I think. But getting it checked out is a wise decission!

Yes, I think you are right that there is not much they can do, and if I have to spend the rest of my life in crocs then I won't mind  .... as long as it doesn't hurt any more.

I have long toes and was also a very clumsy child - or so I was told, I think I was just a normal child but that's another story.

I was always bashing my toes and have a couple of misshapen ones now. The pain and bruising was exactly as described. I was once told that it's only important if you damage the big toe as that's the one you use for balance, you could lose the others as people often do and not really notice. How true that is I have no idea but my 'broken' toes have never bothered me. I just can't curl them. I don't remember the pain lasting more than a couple of weeks, maybe a month but it was a long time ago.

It bloomin' hurts!

I have broken my foot once & my toe once too, at different times. Both times were excruciatingly painful & I swelled up a lot with the toe (not so much with the foot)

I could walk with my broken foot - in fact they made me walk to x-ray even though Triage said it was probably broken.

I walked past someone with a broken wrist in a wheelchair :lol:

Go get it looked at.

Typical

Well, the nurse checked it over and said it was swollen and could be broken and agreed with what we'd said that they don't do anything, but she did suggest a support bandage during the day until bedtime.

She said the bruising could take between 4 and 6 weeks to heal

I have quite podgy feet  which made it difficult for me to tell if it was swollen.

Back at school and on my feet makes it ache a lot and although the real black bit has calmed down I now have a new black bit heading towards my toes :(

The bandage does help - not so sure about the arnica cream though :?

It's funny though that when I saw the nurse there was a trainee doctor there too, and he sweetly asked if my son was alright having fallen on his elbow. (Think he probably thought DS was a little boy)

He is fine and a lot better for landing on my foot rather than the floor

My OH discovered that he'd been living with a broken foot for over 10 years!

He originally damaged it when he was a tree surgeon years ago and was told that it was a bad sprain. It continued to trouble him over the years and it was only when he went to see a podiatrist that the break was spotted. He did another xray and could see it straight away.

Hope your foot starts to feel better soon... my Mum used to swear by Comfrey, or knitbone as she used to call it :D

Oh fab !! I actually have a tub of comfrey cream in my cupboard

I will use that too.

Showed the girls I work with my foot yesterday. They were quite shocked that my son could cause so much damage

Every day he has asked me how my foot is - poor thing - I just tell him it's fine and it was an accident.

BTW seaweed goes nice in butter especially on roast potatoes :D
