Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

My oldest girl is off colour. She's about 6 and a half. She's seen 7 other hens come and go. She wont eat, drank a little and just sits. I was hoping she'd just fall asleep and not wake up when he time comes and not suffer. Doesn't seem to be in pain. I got her to replace an Omlet hen. She has a wonky beak. Feeling sad

Found her dead this morning. Broke my heart but couldnt cry as had to go to work. She was a funny little thing. I wonder if new girls tipped her over the edge as she was a lone hen twice and never seemed too bothered.

It's always sad to lose along time friend, but it sounds like she was just very tired and went to sleep.

I hope it's that and not strain from another new lot of girls. Some would've despatched her long ago. I'm a soppy moo. I picked her up yesterday and just knew she wouldn't last the night. She was curled up this morning. She wasn't the prettiest hen but always crouched and accepted a stroke and loved her mealworms. She hadn't laid for years and was dreadful egg eater. I am crying writing this. Didn't think it would affect me. She had dreadful moults when I thought she might weaken and die. Sorry about this. Don't want to put newbies off. Thanks for reading my ramblings and for your nice comments. Xx

I've cried over everything I've ever lost, my mice passing away felt just as bad as the dogs.

 

It does sound like it was old age rather than undue stress really from what you've told us.

Don't worry, better to care about your animals which you obviously do, just makes it harder when we lose them. I too have an oldie, was sure I was going to lose her over the winter and am dreading it happening.

It's always upsetting when you lose a pet, no matter what animal it was or how old they were - it's a sign that you care so you shouldn't worry about being sad.

 

Sounds like she had a good and long life with a loving and caring owner.
