soapdragon
All booked for 14th to 16th Feb. Arrive 1.00pm Tuesday and leave for the airport 7.00pm Thursday so 2.5 days in reality. Any pointers on what to do (and, of course, what NOT to do!) very welcome bearing in mind that we have 12 and 9 year olds in tow (so nightlife, clubs etc out! I am guessing we'll all be shattered anyway!) We are staying in the heart of the Old Town very close to Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square. Thanks in advance! Grandmashazzie
My memories of Prague are it's very easy to do in 2 days, everything all contained within walking distance. Many churches/cathedrals,the astronomical clock and the Jewish quarter are a must. You could perhaps download some info and I think there are free aps for walking tours of all cities. If you are splashing out on a nice meal I would recommend The Circle Line.

AndyRoo
Personally I wouldn't bother with the torture museum (assuming that's even your thing), it was quite small and it wasn't that great. I forget the name of the place, but if you go round the back of the famous clock, there is a really nice bar/restaurant that does a really delicious goulash! The Dogmother
Went there about 10 years ago, and stayed in the Charles Bridge Residence Hotel; really spacious rooms and very central. As others have said, very small and lots of walking to be done, so wear comfy shoes. Stick to the back streets for authenticity, and eat off the beaten track as it's cheaper and much better food. Hope that you enjoy it.
soapdragon
Wow! Thanks for all the advice; we had a lovely time and walked about 25 miles over the 2.5 days according to OH fitbit thingy. The hotel was only 5 mins from Old Town Square and less from Charles Bridge but in a quiet back street so could not have wished for a better base. Amazing buffet breakfasts....we'd happily recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting Prague; not luxurious but very clean and comfy with all the basics. Perfect weather, cold but clear and we really enjoyed our 4.5 hours at the amazing castle (all for around £18!) St Vitus Cathederal was just jaw droppingly massive and architecure in general breathtaking. So many fabulous old houses with interesting paintings and decorations all through the Old Town. We found two very 'authentic' locals places to eat and lots to look at and did some wandering off the beaten track. The icing on the cake, as far as the boys were concerned was finding a Lego shop with a Lego museum attached The only downside was the hordes of tour groups, even in February. We all got badly 'barged' a number of times; on each occasion by Japanese, who have a reputation for being extremely polite. Well, not in tour groups in Prague they are not! The flights were good although a bomb scare at the airport on the way home didn't do much for my nerves (as we had the youngs to think of I had to stay off the G&T which is my usual resort when flying.) Luckily the terminal that was shut was 2 and we were flying from 1 but tannoy annoucements stating the closure was 'for secret reasons' came over as a bit KGB! Al in all a great success and a very interesting city to visit. Had we been on our own then I think we'd have liked a couple of extra days to maybe do some tours and possibly a river trip but the boys were not ready for another 2 days of walking! We were glad to climb into our own beds, though, at 2.10am on Friday morning!
