Lola has new friends

Recommended Posts

I lost Maisie last October and since then Lola has been virtually alone, with Brian the Silkie cockerel in an adjoining pen and blind Silkie Florence, who she could never get to run around and forage with, as her only companion. Florence and Brian were given to me last July, both in poor condition with scaly leg and feet that were balls of dried mud. After carefully removing some of the hardened mud and leaving the rest to drop off naturally, both animals were found to have lost toes. After treating the scaly leg Florence was able to walk more comfortably and was happy to gently potter in one small area of the lawn, enjoying the sunshine on her back, and Lola would fuss around her and stay close by. Florence died unexpectedly a month ago and although Lola was quite aloof with Maisie, I decided to get a couple of new banties.

We went over to the Domestic Fowl Trust and picked up a Hamburgh and a Friesian.

Daphne the Hamburgh and Maureen the Friesian have settled in very well. Lola has taken to them very quickly and despite being eight years old is running around like a POL. It is so nice to see a bit of the old Lola return and the three of them burble along to each other all day, Lola has taught them her 'let me out of the run' screech, which I now hear in three different pitches!

Here they are all together

Daphne laid the first full day she was with us and Maureen about a week later, we are now getting a dozen small eggs a week :)

Great choice! :D

What did you think of the Domestic Fowl Trust? I heard bad reports a few years ago around the time new management took over and it became a Dinosaur park and tbh thought it had closed down!

it split off from the dinosaur park and is now in Warwickshire not sure how it was split through or weather or not there is still a connection with the dinosaur park owners

I thought it was lovely, Lewis, the runs for the large fowl were very big, WIR approx 10 feet wide by around 40 feet long I think, didn't take too much notice but did remember thinking they were large enclosures. Banties were in moveable low runs and all birds looked very healthy. They had a large selection of birds too. After scouring gumtree and facebook etc for birds that needed rehoming and contacting a couple of local breeders, none had smooth leg banties so we popped in on the offchance.

The whole place was just chickens and chicken related stuff. When we got home I re-read reports of it being a play area etc but there was no evidence of this.
