lost-sheep
ARGHHHHHHH... does anyone else find hime very annoying??? may have something to do with him ruining our school dinners... there was nothing wrong with ours. at break you had a choice of crisps, chocolate cookies, pink or white iced fingers, fruit, rolls and butter, jam donuts and my personal favourite CHOCCIE DONUTS!!! ... but now it's extreme... gone is the yummy unhealthiness and in it's place... Fruit yoghurt(whats wrong with that i hear you cry...well you haven't tried the school snack version and you don't get a spoon! ) the choccie cookies have been replaced by WHOLEWHEAT!!! (or cardboard) and iced fingers, crisps and donuts... yes including the choccie ones are gone!! ... ...but you haven't heard the worst of it yet...you know our nice freshly baked rolls and butter??? well they have only gone and stolen the butter!!!! and given us margarine instead !!! IS BUTTER REALLY THAT MUCH MORE UNHEALTHY THAN THAT NASTY MARGO???? it's rideculous... and it's polluting the environment. all the unhealthy/yummy stuff was never packaged... but the new stuff is!!! and it goes sttraight into the land fill!! one thing is for sure tho... none of that new moosh is going in my mouth i would rather starve... until i can get at the ice cream van at the end of the day! ...if anyone stops that ice cream van... there is no telling what i might do
Geoid
The exact same has happened at my school! My mum (who is a food tech teaher & head of year) says the rules about with the heathy school dinners is too strict! Since it costs alot more for healthy stuff, and theres only a budget of 21p per child [i think] loads of catering companys that provide school meals are going out of business, like it did at my school, so now we get no lunch at all anymore , all thanks to Jamie Oliver At least there is alot of ice cream vans around my school
lost-sheep
we still have lunches.... but you shouls see the canteen!! it's empty apart from 5 people who can't help but pay for rubbish! quite funny really the dinner ladies just stand there ladel in hand over the over-cheesed mashed potato and pasta! (thats all we get now... apart from salad leaves... does this look like the face of a rabbit to you?? )
craftyhunnypie
I actually agree with Jamie Oliver! We don't want a nation of obese overweight, seriously unhealthy children do we? Those children are our future generation & if they are all going to die in their 40's or 50's because of heart disease, then I'm all for Jamies alternative eating! I watched body shock the other night. There was this child on there 7 years of age and morbidly obese! Not a nice sight & he missed out on so much in life. It's time to kick bad eating habits & lack of excercise in the butt and eat better & excercise more. No child likes it - I admit, but it is for their own good in the long run. Trust me, you wouldn't want to be diabetic, with a bad back, weak knees, unable to walk far because of getting out of breath, unable to strip off on holiday for fear of embarrassment, or get called names because you've got rolls & rolls of fat! I have seen this type of thing & it is not nice or good. And the smell of McDonalds, just makes me want to throw up!!!!! Emma.x
Geoid
Craftyhunnypie, Do you know how strict the rules regarding school dinners are, they are obsurd, I will try and dig out the rules, if i can find them
Geoid
actually i think the new school dinners are making people thinner... we are all anorexic now... ... or if you eat the food.... bullemic.... and when we get at the ice cream van... complsive eating disorder... are you telling me that is healthy??!! i didn't say i was against a healthier option but to such extreme?? and we only get 1 P.E lesson a week... thats healthy...? Too True, although at my school everyone is getting thinner and thinner, as there is no food in the first place! We need to start a campain to stop this madness
lost-sheep
we will all waste awy into nothingness... then what will people do about the protection of the next generation. we aren't even alowed to eat our own lpacked lunch in our canteen if it has chocolate or crisps in it. which means we have to eat outside in the rain! so although we won't be obese we will have hyper thermia
Geoid
And If we have hypothermia or we are hungry, then we wont work well, then we will get bad grades, then we cant get good jobs, then there will be no more skilled workers for the future, no doctors etc, then the whole world will suffer, all because of school dinners! chickencam
ok guys cool it. Jamie Oliver's heart is in the right place but his message was mis-interpreted by government and local authorities who then went too far. Kids need access to good quality food that they will eat. There is nothing wrong with a white bread roll and butter as a mid-morning snack for a growing teenager who eats breakfast at 7am and then goes on to eat a good lunch. I suspect taking their butter away was a cost saving excercise rather than a health giving one. Butter is a natural product unlike margarine and eaten in moderation is fine. I would like to take this oppotunity to point out that lost-sheep eats three good meals a day including lots of home grown fruit and veg. On the other hand she also eats ice-cream chocolate crisps etc all this makes up a perfectly normal diet for a growing girl. She is taller than me, strong healthy and slim so a little of what you fancy does you good and anyone who followed Jamie's series will know that is what he subscribes to. This message was hijacked by the powers that be and distorted. By the way I am lost-sheep's opinionated mum. Teenagers need to ask their schools for a bit of moderation. They would have a big voice should they choose to use it. TREATS ARE NOT EVIL - try taking corn away from chickens!
Geoid
The thing is that the rules say Schools will not be allowed to sell confectionery, savoury snacks (unless they're free from added salt, sugar or fat) or sweetened drinks. Asking the school for moderation wont help, as its the goverment that controls it, not the schools

Cinnamon
I love Jamie Oliver & think he should be praised highly for the vast improvements he has made to School Dinners. Canteen at my daughters schol is as busy as ever & serves wonderful salads, soups, pastas & rolls. The girls love it I think that Schools shouldn't serve the sort of rubbish they were getting away with feeding our children.I wouldn't allow my girls to eat junk (too often) at home,so why would I be happy for them to eat it at school? Sweets should be a treat, not a daily part of your regular diet That said, isn't butter supposed to be as healthy as or healthier than margarine? Maybe this was an exercise in cost reduction? susiepoos
At the end of the day Jamie Oliver is right. I work in a large accident and emergency department and have done for the last 20 years. It is getting more common now to see people in there thirties coming in with chest pain and having MI's - heart attacks - a few weeks ago we had a 36 year with cardiac arrest who died - it's getting scary and don't get me onto alcohol abuse!!!!! 20 year olds with alcohol addiction is very scary. The main problem with school dinners is providing the healthy meals on the ridiculous budgets that this goverment and local authorities impose - how can you source good quality food, cook it and serve it for 21 pence it's just not possible. The government rants on about what we should and shouldn't do - Gordon Brown I'm sure doesn't follow his governments advice and probably lots of othe MP's don't neither. Parents have a major responsibility towards educating and providing healthy meals for their children. As per usual the nanny state takes over!!!! sparkleeeeee
jamie oliver has done alot of good for the nations school children. for some children their school meal is often their only proper meal of the day, so if the school can make a contribution to the childs health rather than encourage the bad eating habits that they might see at home its a good thing. i certainly dont want my children eating chips and turkey twizlers at school and i dont want them to feel excluded if they choose a healthier option. of course school children are going to be upset, what child would want their high fat and sugar treats taken away? but if they just looked around the playground and counted how many unfit and overweight kids they can see and compared it to 20 years ago they would be shocked. i have friends who have over weight toddlers who feed their children on chips, microwave meals basically anything cheap and frozen that you bung in the microwave and of course regularly go to macdonnalds. i dread to think what their children will be like in a few years. my toddlers might prefer to eat crisps and chocolate instead of fruit and veg but that doesnt mean they are going to have it. i love my children and want them to be healthy and will put up with the screaming and later the moaning about eating healthily because it will be worth it in the end. it is the parents responsibility to educate their children from an early age but unfortunately some parents themselves havent got a clue and encourage bad eating habits so it is sometimes only the school that can attempt to change the bad habits. i do also find that children on a high fat and sugar diet who are often unfit and overweight are less productive in the classroom but this is only my observation. and given a choice most children would prefer to be the active and healthy (and often popular) child in the class rather than the overweight unfit (and often less popular) child. i am speaking as a parent and a teacher. sparkleeeeee
i should also add that school should have more powers to force children to do sport in the state sector it is so easy to get away with doing little or no sport/fitness at school. i used to work in an independent school and the children used to do SIX hours + a week. it was hard to get away with it and there was not ONE child who was really overweight and a couple that were a little tubby. i have also worked in the state sector and i know that independent schools are selective but you can see the difference that healthy eating and fitness can make. i makes me cry when i see an eleven year old severly overweight child who finds it hard to walk up the stairs let alone be brave enough to get changed and do sport with their peers. i vowed that i would never send my children to an independent school before i worked in one. my little boy starts at one next week for nursery and will be there until 13. we dont smoke, drink much and certainly will not be going out or having many holidays for years and my wages will just about pay the fees for both of them but it will be worth it. i know that alot of people cant afford it which is why the state sector has to change for the sake of the younger generation. Olly
chickencam and lost-sheep, you are very funny! I think Jamie was right to draw attention to the Turkey Twizzlers thing, and we do have a nation of overweight kids - but part of the problem is lack of PE (and school playing-fields) and the invention of Nintendo, PlayStation etc, and part of it is budget. I'm sure he never intended schools to use marge instead of butter, or ban kids from eating their own packed lunches indoors. However, can I just say that the most annoying thing about Jamie is that IRRITATING MOCKNEY ACCENT He grew up in rural Essex not in the East End, and I know someone who went to the same school and who talks perfectly normally. Turn it off Jamie, we like your recipes and we like your campaign, you don't need to talk like that to be successful.
Rhapsody
I too think his heart is in the right place, even if it was all a PR stunt to boost a career that had stumbled due to overexposure. Most people seem to forget that kids are genetically hard-wired to seek out the most calorie-rich foods they can, they are not being cussed, it's just the cave-child in them coming out, that is how they survived. Similarly they steer away from potentially poisonous things ie plant foods for the same reason, which is why your taste change as you age and learn to recognise the stuff that wont harm you. A taste for high-fat high-calorie foods was useful to the scavenging, active kids of the Stone age but is a liability to the modern child. I have never understood why kids in school or people in hospital expect to be fed for free (or at a stupidly low price), surely it is time to charge a sensible fee for school/hospital meals in order to provide something good..?
