Cinnamon
Just found out that Cleos School shoes that fitted her at the end of last term are now too small Guess how I will be spending the last day of the holidays?
Mrs Frugal
We went looking for new ones for my boys yesterday as Tom goes back tomorrow and Ollie on Friday and they had NONE in stock to fit them . Aaargh! I've got to try and get the scuffs on last year's shoes covered with shoe polish to last them till Saturday when we can go into Peterborough with tightly crossed fingers to see if they've got any! Good luck, Sarah!! Hope you can get some today.
Tina C
I always spend the last day of the holidays doing the uniform/shoes thing! Its partly because I am disorganised but also because Layla grows so quickly I don't want to buy stuff that doesn't fit by the time term starts. She went back yesterday but we still haven't found any trousers that fit. I have let down last year's but they are still a bit too short. Can anyone recommend a brand that will suit a long thin child? You can almost fit 2 of Layla in the waistband of M&S size 6-7 but they are too short. And as for shoes - we managed to get some this year but she has narrow feet so she has seriously limited choice. I am dreading when she is older and has stronger views on which shoes she has. And why do they always run out of shoes before term has even started? In a few weeks time they will tell us that they aren't stocking many styles now because there isn't much demand. Clarks of all retailers should know that children's feet grow.... Good luck with your shopping Kate and Sarah.
Guest
I get the uniforms for my lot from Adams, because they have adjustable waistbands - Owen is like a stick at the moment, so his waist is tiny compared with an avarage 8 year old, so they are perfect for him. Louise
My mum used to have the shoe problem with me Tina and was fine until I got to about 12 and wanted the same fashion shoes as everyone else as the basic strap style shoe got me badly bullied The tantrums I used to pull when we went to the only shop that had shoes that fitted and only had the one design I think if you look online now there is more choice but I do feel for you I still have some problems nowadays as I am 6.5 AA fitting
Tina C
Aaah thanks Shona, I haven't tried Adams - I have not found any adjustable waistbands in girls school trousers yet. Right, I wonder if they have a website...
Guest
They do have a website, and delivery 'in-stock' items really quickly!
Tina C
I just had a look at the Adams website - they actually put leg length in their sizing charts as well, so will have a session with the tape measure tonight and avoid a trip to Cambridge. As a former 'Retail Analyst' I really am a useless shopper! Lousie - the bullying was what I was worried about but as she does not really care at the moment (she's 6) we will wait and deal with it if it surfaces. She had three pairs to choose from at first - which was more than she gets sometimes - but 2 didn't fit her - and those were the ones she tried on first Interestingly, they were the more 'girly' ones. She is a bit of a tomboy but I sense a bit of wanting to conform creeping in now. I asked her several times if she wanted to look elsewhere for that style but she was happy with the ones that did fit. Then she went and chose a Dr Who lunch bag rather than a girly one so maybe she is not going to cave in to the pressure yet!
Jules.
Cool- a Doctor Who lunchbag- we have one of those in our household
chickencam
Does anyone know where I can buy a Klip It Lunch cube from on the high street ( Lakeland sell them but I do not want to pay postage ) our local Waitrose and Debenhams used to sell them but they don't anymore. They are great because you can put a sandwich in one section then a few crisps ( we share 2 or 3 packs between 5 of us - healthier that way ) in the 2nd section and a cake in the 3 rd section. They also save on all that envionment zapping cling-film, bags and foil.
The Dogmother
Rosie has really wide feet and is a size 2. Thankfully, her shoes from last year still fit as it's a nightmare trying to get any to fit her, she has the widest fitting, unlike me. Next schoolwear is fab quality and comes up quite narrow. I get Rosie's skirts from there and she has to have an age 12. She's gone back in summer dresses though as it's still quite warm.
Helly Welly
Abi went back to school last Thursday in her Crocs and by Friday afternoon had put het toe through the end. They were getting a bit worn but i could have done without spending Saturday scouring Leicester for school shoes that didn't have a heel
Cinnamon
Got them Nasty clumpy Bootleg things from Clarkes, but they fit & she likes them *phew* ! Reading was FULL of harassed mothers & fed up children today I am not usually this disorganised, but her feet have grown by a half size during the holidays (I had her measured during the first week of term) She is now a 7 .....goodness knows what size she will be when she stops growing Both of my girls are long & skinny too Tina, & its a lot easier now they are big enough to wear ladies sizes Gap were always good, as they do long & lean fit, & they sometimes had school type trousers. Apart from that,we found that Next were Ok, & M&S fine so long as I bought them big & they wore them low on their hips, which they seem to want to do anyway
Looney
Thank goodness I don't have children so can avoid the "back to school" shopping! I used to dread it when I was at school! I had very wide feet and could wreck a pair of shoes in no time at all so from the age of about 6 or 7 I was always kitted out in Doc Martens....which really weren't fashionable at the time and I had to stand my ground if girly-girls laughed at them. But I LOVED them and they were so much nicer than the hideous T-bar school shoe equivalent. Aaah memories!
Cate in NZ
I agree with the Gap recommendation for long and skinny fits Sarah, my Seb has always fitted that description well.and Gap was the only place we could buy him jeans that would actually fit. Interestingly we never got school uniform from there, usually we went for elasticated waist school trousers, I can't remember where from now, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was Adams
Guest
My James is also taller than he is wide, although he is one of the shortest in his class trousers that fit at the waist are too short. As for shoes, he wore the same pair all last year as his feet didn't grow, 2 weeks before the end of term we had him measured and they said he had no more growing room but the shoes would be fine for the last 2 weeks. I WILL NOT buy clarks shoes though, they are a complete rip off nowdays, the money they charge is way over the top for cheap shoes, they fall apart, scuff and in a week look like market tat. Last year we got him fully waterproof Timberland shoes (proper school shoes not boots or trainers ) and even at the end of the year they looked like new with a lick of polish. This year they didn't have any so we are trying Geox shoes.

Rosie has very wide feet, hence her nickname of 'Piggie-Square-Toes' She has had a few pairs now of purple docs with flowers and loves them to bits - they fit her so well and last for ever. feemcg
I have brought 5 - yes 5 - different pairs of school trousers home for Anna and none have fitted. I've been returning things for weeks!. She's 7, 8 in October and 6-7 are too small, 7-8 are either too small OR too big and 8-9 way too long. Last year she had a pair from Next and a pair from Adams, both with adjustable waist - which is a godsend. Don't even start me on shoes
