Guest
No, not ALL of them Richard! Plenty more to choose from, so I'll just HAVE to have some more! And yes, you're right. We did discuss this somewhere. Now I've got Mixture and Vox
Lovemychooks
Ooh that's good to know Ginette because i'm 5 mins away from Fetcham and was thinking of getting more chickens plus a few more ex-batts, thanks
arowland17
I agree with everything said about Southmead, we got our 2 from there and she only had ISAs and RIR/light sussex crosses left when we got ours but they were all so well kept we couldn't wait for her little ones to get big enough!! we just got 2 of the RIR crosses and don't regret it, wouldn't of minded some of those lovely ones you have but we were too excited and couldn't wait! They are so well kept though, and the lady there is extremely helpful we've rung her a couple of times for advise and she doesn't mind at all, I can't recommend them highly enough, we are so pleased with our 2 they're very happy hens and are the best of friends! Guest
Fetcham must be within striking distance! I love the Bluebelle too - and she is crouching down for me and letting me stroke her now! I am just loving them all so much. All I want to do is sit in the garden with them. Just the same as with the first group. I don't think I can wait 2 years before going again! I still want Skylines and the lady at Southmead has Buff Sussexes too.
Laura & CTB
How are Kelly Kath and Kim now Ginette - feeling any braver yet??
Guest
Kelly is too busy eating to notice Kim is vicious but more tolerant now. She gets hold of flesh as well as feathers and won't let go. Quite horrible! Kath won't let them stay in the garden. She rounds them up and sends them back to the run. Occasionally she goes in to give them each a peck on their backs. The new girls are happy exploring the 'other half' of the run anyway. They eat the rose bush and steal food from the blue grubs!
skye
I've been feeling nervous about the prospect of introducing new hens to our two, but I think I might consider now after seeing your lovely girls Ginette! And you're right, Leatherhead is just up the A3 from us! Skye xx

Settling in just nicely then I'm sure peace and harmony (ooooh good chicken names ) will reign soon enough once more. I'm very envious. And you're right, Leatherhead is just up the A3 from us! Skye xx Mine didn't know there were any other chickens! They'd lived for two years, just the 3 of them. So they were very shocked. Yours are not so very well established yet, so it might be easier now than later. It just can't be rushed and I will just have to let them have separate turns in the garden for a while. Kelly happily ate mealworms with the new 4 yesterday - as I said, food is just SO much more important! But I can't wait until they are fully integrated. The Dogmother
So true, you can't have enough feed and water stations when you're introducing newbies - they get obssessed with getting there before the others be prepared to take a step backwards if they kick off and as Ginette says, don't rush things. Guest
I am thrilled. I just can't believe it! Having read all the threads about introducing new hens, I had picked up that it takes about 3 weeks for the fighting to stop. I was aware of course that this was an approximate guide, but all the same I was thinking of this magical date as a milestone and then things would settle down after that. On Friday - 3 weeks to the very day - I was amazed to see all 7 chickens happily scratching in the garden. The old 3 no longer feel the need to round the new girls up and scare them back into the run! 3 weeks TO THE VERY DAY!!!!!!!!! I am astounded. They are not mixing yet, of course. I know I have to wait for about 3 months for that. That'll be on 14th December then! I am loving them still and spend ages in the garden just watching them interacting. The new girls peck my toenails, which the old ones never did. Lieblich in fact likes to peck my hands too! Mixture is such a character. She is so clumsy and I find her very funny. She tries to hurry across the garden to the other 3, hopefully without the old 3 noticing. But she puts her head down, makes herself really wide and then flaps her wings violently to make herself fast - everyone notices!
Snowy
That's brilliant Ginette! You are right about the difference between them being accepted and actually mixing. I had 7 that hung about in 3 seperate groups until the other day - I realised they were all finally together having a mooch under a plant and dustbathing Then I upset the applecart and chucked another 3 in yesterday Very few skirmishes so far though, only a couple of the 7 feel they need to exert their authority and the 3 newbies are too many to pick on all at once. I just keep making sure there's lots of food about. Lovely to have a little flock isn't it!

Guest
I'm pleased to hear your latest introductions are going well Snowy. You're right, it is fantastic having a little flock. I'm sure I have room for a few more . . . Emma, it must have been one of those busy patches about 3 weeks ago! Thank you for the compliments. I am totally smitten. Guest
Piccolo (the Amber Star) has just laid her first egg! 45g! I didn't expect her to be first as the lady I bought her from said Amber Stars mature more slowly than the others. All so easy, she just went into the eglu and 15 minutes later there was the egg! She is a lovely hen. She was extremely nervous when we first got her, but now she just loves to sit on our shoulders and wants to be picked up all the time. What a gorgeous girl! Guest
My new 4 are just 20 weeks, so I wasn't really expecting any eggs this week. Does anyone else have an Amber Star or similar? I was just wondering if they are all exceptionally friendly.
Guest
I used to have an Amber Star, and she was a lovely friendly little thing. she was an exceptional layer as well, of mid-brown eggs, and I was very sad to lose her.
