superjules
Why is it that my 2 have a whole eglu to themselves, yet insist on sleeping one on top of the other (literally!) in the nest every night? I could fit 20 chickens in my eglu if they all slept like that!
arowland17
mine pile on top of each other too, the eglu looks empty when they're in it, could easily hold more than the 3/4 suggested, I reckon about 7-8 could fit quite comfortably in it and my 2 aren't that small!! Laura & CTB
Same here - makes you wonder why they bothered installing roosting bars - should have made it one big nest
superjules
Glad to hear it's not just mine then! Maybe it's just laziness, Daff doesn't want to have to make the long journey from the roosting bars to the nest in the morning and Marigold is forming a not-so-orderly queue!! lisa33
When we first got the Eglu we were not convinced that we could have three girls in there. When you look in after they have gone to bed though there is room for at least another three!
Guest
They like to sleep cuddled up together because that way they stay warm. When we got the new 4, there was terrible moving about every night. The poor little Amber Star wanted to be in the middle to keep warm but she kept getting pushed down to the end. The jiggling around went on for ages! No-one in the nesting-box yet though! That makes such a difference - all the poo is in the poo tray! Cinnamon
I have 2 teeny Bantams in one Eglu, & Floss, the Polish insists on sleeping on top of the Eglu, perched on the handle (they are in a pen!)
Beauty-Box
My two sleep on top of each other in the nesting box. They look so cute!
Richard
yep - seven hens in a cube, loads and loads of room, and they pile on top of each other. I reckon I could have two layers of them in there - maybe get about 20 - and mine are big girls, none of your size zero bantam rubbish - proper Charlotte Church/Nigella Lawson stuff (sorry - wrong thread and I'm going to get into trouble ... again )

Richard
Although I think that 'two fat ladies' might be a more appropriate comparison with your chooks Richard ... Yep, my Orps are certainly shaping up that way! Mind you, their feathers are pretty loose its difficult to tell quite how big they are underneath the feathers. they've been really funny in these winds - the feathers have been all over the place! talk about a bad hair day! Evil Georgie is pretty solid, but she isn't a big breed, like the youngsters, so its quite funny to see them all together - the young girls are all around 20 weeks now, and still look pretty young (no combs, not fleshed out - careful Richard) but they are the same size as Georgy. It almost looks as though the perspectives are all wrong. I need to get some new photos in the album
Snowy
I love the big, fat fluffy chooks
craftyhunnypie
Yep my newbies (the 3 of them) sleep piled up together in the nest of the eglu. They look so cute when I peep at them, but it means I have a lot of poo picking to do every day, if not a full bedding change in the nest. When they start laying, i think I'll be getting a lot of crushed eggs due to them piling on top of each other. Hmmm. Emma.x
Carol U
I'm pleased to see that other people's chooks sleep in the nesting box too. I was beginning to think mine were a bit dim and didn't know how to roost. Only problem is that it does make for rather pooey eggs!
bridgy chooks
our chooks don't necessarily sleep on top of each other but they do have set sleeping arrangements - Gabbi normally likes to be in the far back corner (facing the back) and Maggi sits by the eggport - often at right angles to the way she's meant to sit so she ends up having to grip 2 bars with each foot

bridgy chooks
they also walk around in circles every evening when they put themselves to bed until they settle - and then settle in the same place every night
