Cinnamon
I have sent him a message asking him to point out EXACTLY what makes it better than an "Egglu" It will be interesting to see what he comes back with You don't suppose its "you know who" from the other forum selling her hen houses,do you??? Cinnamon
I have had an email back from him - this is what he says..... Hi, the improvements I have made are the slide out nest boxes, which work just like a clothes drawer, allowing 2 hens to lay at the same time, the internal dimensions are larger than an eglu to give the hens more space and air. The walls are a full 18 mm thick unlike the eglu which is only 3mm. this gives much better insulation keeping them cool in summer and warm in winter. the roof is coated in a highly reflective aluminium based product to stop the house from turning into an oven in the middle of summer. the floor pan lifts out from behind the nest boxes for easy cleaning in a similer way to the eglu. The only time you would need to tip it on its back would be if you needed to clean the inside of the roof for disinfecting etc. I have decided to use a 40mm X 40mm suspended perch as this is a more natural position for the hens to roost than a slatted floor. Happy chickens lay more eggs! I will be making some changes to the next house, making it lighter in weight and adding a full width door to the back for easier access. Any comments??? If any of that is not true (what he has said about the Eglu) then he should not use the word eglu in the listing really.
Ruth
As far as I understand, he is wrong about the wall thickness - eglus have a double wall with an air space between - here's a quote from the Omlet website: "The chickens are kept warm in the winter and cool in the summer, thanks to modern twin walled insulation. " So the 3mm wall thickness is not the whole story - there are two of these walls with an air space between. Maybe he deliberately spelt Eglu wrong so that he couldn't be sued by Omlet - he can say it's "better than an Egglu" (whatever that is) just not "better than an Eglu"! chocchick
It's not the most tasteful of chicken houses
Louise
Just remember peeps it is each to their own Wooden, plastic, gothic - whatever so long as the chooks are happy and healthy each to their own we don't want a reputation like 'other' forums have got with people being mean about new ideas and innovations. Personally I don't like it but whatever floats your boat
Lesley-Jean
Not to my taste either
Nicola H
You are right Louise, it looks like he has spent a lot of time building it and in actual fact I quite like it, very retro like a VW camper van...........I say good luck to him and there are certainly enough people bidding on it..................Just a little unfair on his part to compare it to an Eglu because it is miles away, but it is a lot cheaper. Louise
How much is he selling them for I am lusting after a mark III eglu now I know one is on the drawing board so to speak
Nicola H
At the moment the bidding is up to £72 and he has had 12 bids on it, the previous one which was a gothic wooden hen house went fo £175, but he doesn't deliver and only accepts cash..................... I am also waiting in anticipation of the Mark 3 Eglu because i want to increase my flock, and am even thinking of hatching some eggs under Bunty, if i can find somebody to take the cockerels off me. So come on Omlet give us more details and a date when it will be available...........
The Dogmother
Louise - I mentioned the idea of purple Eglus to Will on Saturday, and he thought it was a lovely idea, so you might even see one....
Cate in NZ
Not sure that it's my kind of thing, and definitely lacking the fantastic service that Omlet provide. But I don't actually dislike it, and would have probably given it serious consideration if I wasn't already a committed eglu-er . I'm all in favour of innovation in terms of chicken coops, nice to see something more interesting than the traditional arks, and it's nice to see sturdy, well built chicken houses that look interesting in the back garden, are affordably priced and making keeping chickens more accessible for everyone. Well done him for having a go, I hope he does well with it I looked at the gothic one too, that definitely wasn't my style at all, but he's obviously experimenting with designs and styles. I did find myself wondering how much this had been inspired by Omlet's success though, he's seen that they've recognised a market and are doing well with it and is trying to find himself a little corner of it by offering more contemporary styling and cheaper prices. I was another one muttering enthusiastically about purple eglus on Saturday, Johannes did say that they were willing to consider colour changes from time to time, phasing out some of the older colours and introducing new ones, but that was only an off the cuff remark, no actual plans as yet. There is a big difference between PURPLE and LILAC, so you'd better make sure the Omlet lads know which one you mean. I know Kate was referring to her T Shirt colour which was Lilac Purple Lilac Edited January 16, 2006 by Guest
