Considering that the moderators are the ones who have to keep an eye on all these sections, I think their opinions count, don't you.

I've only just caught up with this, and this has probably been said before (or after, I can never work out this past and future forum thingy) but the Mod's have one heck of a job keeping up with this forum, and im sure that most of them have jobs and lives to keep up as well.

I dont know exactly what is involved being a mod, but I assume its something like reading every post and every reply to make sure that there is nothing unreasonable going on.

there has just been a load of new sections added (many that are nothing to do with keeping chooks), so come on you lot, give the mods a break and let them catch their breath.

sorry for my opinion, but as someone with too much to do and too little time, I have sympathy for the mods

Hear, hear!

I have only just caught up with this thread, and I'm wishing I hadn't read it - the reason I enjoy the Omlet forum so much is that it's friendly. I'm saddened to read some of the posts above - people seem to be losing perspective.

This is a forum to chat about chickens, and ultimately the only reason it works so well and remains so friendly is the hard work and determination of the Mods. I think it should be their decision - if there were many threads like this one, I would not bother with the forum any more because it doesn't make for pleasant reading.

never be sorry for an opinion Cathy, it is very valid.

I use the forum often but rarely post........but i read it all the time.

The Mods do a fantastic job, unpaid and often thankless (i suppose).

Why is another section neccessary? BH are CHICKENS

can't we just leave it at that?

Thats a lovely thing to say Olly! Thank you on behalf on the Mods! :D

Well, I have only been away for one day and look at the chaos my departure has caused!:wink::lol:

I haven't been a Mod for very long, but i am thoroughly enjoying it. It takes a lot of reading and checking and careful consideration, but this forum is a fantastic place and i feel very at home here.

The written word is a funny thing and can be taken to mean something else without the facial expression, tone and nuances that the spoken word brings. For this reason, i am very careful about how/what i post for 'fear' of upsetting the reader. (Also spell checking )

TBH I am quite shocked at some of the things posted on this thread.

Battery hens have an appalling life until they are lucky enough to be rehomed. I applaud all those that have the time, heart and soul to take these poor creatures home and care for them.

If questions are asked, they will be answered by someone, be it in Chickens/Chicken clinic or a new BHWT section. i have learnt so much since joining this forum and couldn't live without it now (therapist is also addicted too)

Lets all try to get along.

I think you just summed what a being a mod is all about.

Just one other thing the BHWT used to have a forum but disbanded it because of the negative attitude to the farmers that was occuring and without the support of these farmers there would be no 'rescues' I hate that word BTW it impies something more but that is just me

So in short I wouldn't want to damage relationships by well meaning people posting something that a farmer if they got to see it took offense to :?

That is very true, Louise, our valuable relationship with the BHWT could be irrevocably damaged by adverse posting.

I remember the their forum being disbanded for the very reason you mention.

The vote is coming out strongly in favour of the status quo anyway.

As they say...if it isn't broken....don't fix it.

I think that sums it all up guys. As Christian and others have said, this is a friendly forum of hobbyist chicken keepers, who also support the BHWT.

Jane Howarth, who founded the BHWT is a lovely kind, patient person who has tremendous energy and drive; by working in co-operation with the farmers, she manages to save many hens from slaughter and re-homes them so that they can continue to live happy lives. Without this co-operation from the farmers, there would be no hen rescues. The last thing she needs is a campaign against the farmers...I'll explain why:

Most of the farmers I have spoken to have as much distaste for this intensive method of farming as we do, but are driven to it by the economics of farming and the pressure from the egg industry. The key is to help them with their redundant hens, and to educate the buying end of the market so that people are no longer happy to buy battery eggs and we are no longer flooded with cheap imported battery products (eggs and broiler chooks) from abroad. It is the population's buying habits that are fuelling the industry, and that is where we need to concentrate our efforts to bring down the demand... the gentle campaigns are working and the publicity from people like Jimmy Doherty, HFW and Jamie Oliver have helped to swing public opinion; the sales of battery products are going down and free-range/organic products are increasing.

Let's each make it our missions to chat to people about it and educate them gently in the ways of freerange, less intensive forms of rearing animals.

As Christian said, thank you all for your support of the mod team - we all work unpaid and the majority of us are also juggling fulltime jobs and families while we moderate this forum. Our aim is to keep it a happy family place where backyard chicken keepers can come for information or a chat.

Well the poll is into its 3rd day now and I think it's time the poll closed. Ample time for regular users to decide which way they want to vote.

THE POLL IS NOW CLOSED

Should we have a section on the forum for rehomed ex-battery hens

Yes 33% [ 20 ]

No, Buffie's BHWT news sticky and individual postings will do fine 56% [ 34 ]

Maybe consider it for the future? 3% [ 2 ]

Let's just have a BHWT sticky with rehoming stories instead. 6% [ 4 ]

Total Votes : 60

A lot of members have voted - this is probably the most popular poll for a long time. Can we say that the majority of members who have voted have said that they don't want to add another section and would prefer all battery hen postings to stay where they are. Buffie is very good at keeping her sticky up to date, we have the Get Togethers section for meet ups where funds for the BHWT will be raised and we have the Chickens and Clinic sections available for postings about either Omlet/breeder/rescue hens.

If you'd like to keep your own personal story about rehoming hens going, just post regularly in it as Lesley does for her Good Life topic. There is no need to make it a sticky if it's kept up to date with regular posts and we'll leave the forums as they are for the time being. However, I'm more than happy to reassess the situation again in the future where the results of the poll might come out differently as more people take on rescue hens.

Thanks to everyone who has voted.

Can I repeat that the poll is now CLOSED.
