Couperman
I have noticed that there has been an influx of new members on the forum recently I was wondering how many people have decided to get some chooks as a direct result of the recent TV campaigns on chicken welfare and the associated publicity? I know they have certainly had an impact on the availability of free range chicken in the supermarkets.: Kev.
Yorkshire Pudding
I had really wanted them since I was 5 - I only had to wait 33 years I have noticed more and more people interested in the idea and asking me how easy it is to look after them. I am spreading the chicken gospel throughout Yorkshire! If the TV programmes help to reduce the number of birds suffering in the intensive system, wonderful. I haven't noticed more free-range products on the shelves locally, but the shelves that were always there are now often empty. I hope this is a sign of increased demand. Ain't Nobody Here
I have noticed that there has been an influx of new members on the forum recently Great minds . I was thinking just the same - there's over 4 pages of new members just for January . I was contemplating doing a poll but you've saved me the bother . crazygal
This is an interesting one...my answer was no, I've wanted them for ages, but to be honest i'd only started thinking seriously about keeping chickens about a year ago... so why take the plunge when I did? Well, it was the weekend after watching Hugh F-W's and JO's progs, so chickens were very much in my mind, I said to OH why don't we just do it (get chickens that is!) and he said ok! I said REALLY??!! And he said why not? so we did. So although I'd been getting books out of the library for the past 12 months, been talking to lots of other people about chickens I suppose the programmes were that push that I needed to actually put my plan into progress. And may I just add that this forum is so friendly and welcoming, and I just love seeing pics of everyone elses' chickens too!! So thank you everybody! Cate in NZ
I had chickens for ages before Hugh & Jamie started their campaign, but watching their programmes has made me very impatient to resume chicken keeping................just as soon as I've moved I'll be out there, hunting for the local chicken breeders and planning my bigger and better chicken run
Blonde Chicken
I too had chickens ages before the campaigns. But I am pleased to see it is converting some people. I have had more comments recently about the chickens and people are seeing it as less weird.
Eyren
With me it was Bob Flowerdew - I bought his book "The No-Work Garden" when I was thinking of getting an allotment, and he said: "I cannot recommend hens too highly as a recycling scheme; everyone ought to have a few..." Who can resist Bob with his enviably long ponytail and twinkly blue eyes?

Who can resist Bob with his enviably long ponytail and twinkly blue eyes? I remember him talking about his chickens on Gardeners question time once, when womeone asked what you should do with the slugs you collect from your garden -- "give them to the chickens" was his reply. he is indeed very
Clash City Rocker
I've had my 3 chickens for about 8 months and since the recent publicity I've been thinking of getting some more chickens....So today I'M off to get another one!!!!. Later in the year I hope to upgrade from Eglu to Cube and rescue a couple of Battery Hens.
ubereglu
Well obviously these programmes didn't influence me to get chickens as we started keeping a couple back in August '05. However I think that it's great if more people want to keep chickens as it will hopefully help to educate others about laying hens!
Milly
I had wanted chickens for ages, and finally took the plunge last June. But the programmes have made me think more about hidden eggs. I always bought free range eggs and chicken, but hadn't been so careful about things like Mayonnaise. And since the programmesI have been buying organic cat food (well, I can't but free range for myself and then buy battery for the cats, can I?). The cats love it, but it's soooo expensive. Paola
No but it has really got my sister thinking about getting some rescue girls I told her about them last year but the penny really dropped when she saw Jamie Oliver this week. mayflower
I have been wanting chickens for three years, and often looked on sites to see what breed I would like. However, Hugh's programme helped me make the decision to have ex. bats. I collect mine in a few weeks time!
Couperman
there should be an option - already had them for years I did try to add one with an edit but it wouldn't let me. Tessa the Duchess
About 2 odd years ago I saw a small item on the telly about the BHWT in Devon, they showed a rescue. I immediately knew I wanted to keep chickens, preferably ex batts. All my family and friends were aghast and I was told quite firmly that I couldn't keep chickens in a back garden in London Beginning of last year there was a big article in the Saturday Telegraph about Omlet and the Eglu and how it was the perfect housing for city back garden chickens, that did it I didn't get ex batts as the rescues in Essex got postponed twice, so ended up with 3 Omlet girls. Am now in the middle of building a big run and intend to get ex batts in the very near future Tessa

Olly
already had them - but I'm delighted that the programmes have got so many more people thinking about where their food comes from, and interested in keeping them. The more urban chicken-keepers there are, the easier it will be to get supplies! And having chickens has enriched my life, I mean that absolutely seriously, so I'm glad other people are going to have the opportunity. I wouldn't be without mine. Milly Have you tried Burns? The chicken is from non caged birds and the duck is also free range: www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk our woggles eat the dog food (although we dont buy the chicken flavoured as we dont want to encourage them to like the taste of chicken )

I don't know how long you get to edit - sometimes there is a time limit and I can't remember if we use that on this forum If the edit button has disappeared then you just need to contact a moderator. I'm so glad I saw that article. I bought the "Keeping Pet Chickens" book and managed to persuade my OH it was "a good idea". My eglu and first 2 Omlet girls arrived in March last year. Now I'm building my "Palacio de las Gallinas" (Hen Palace) so I can get more!
