chocchick
Help! I have to talk six formers through a genetic engineering practical tomorrow , AND get up early and not be late for once as lots of people will rely on me being there (not like academia where a strike would make no difference) I am being a Researcher in Residence and sharing my research expertise ( ) with a school to provide a postive role model for science. Still trying to perfect my work for the week I am very shy, quiet and have no real teaching experience  Hoping they won't be
Popcorn
You'll be fine Choccy. Make sure you are prepared with what you are going to talk about, and vary your teaching methods with pictures, questions and answers, lots of examples and maybe even a little quiz at the end. It will keep them on their toes, rather than doing the old chalk and talk methods. Lots of deep breathing if you find yourself starting to worry... Good Luck, will be thinking of you and will await a positive report tomorrow. Sleep well.....xx
Chicken on a mission
Try and get a good nights sleep and remember that it makes little difference whether you are talking to 1 person or 1000. Good luck, I look forward to reading tomorrow night how you you got on
Linda
Good luck Sarah. It sounds a really worthwhile thing you are doing. Being sixth-formers the students should be sufficiently interested in their subject to listen to what you have to say. Hope it goes well. Show them what you're made of!! Update us tomorrow. Karen & co.
Good luck.... they'll be so in awe of you they be facinated. They are just kids at the end of the day (even though some of them will tower over you!!!) I feel like a midget at school some days and I'm 5'10 Enjoy, Karen x
Guest
If you get stuck, you could always bring chickens into the topic. Ours are genetically engineered to lay eggs more frequently than pure breeds, aren't they? Good luck tomorrow

chocchick
I don't think I need to do that to prove I have lost the plot I went clipart crazy in my powerpoint Part 1 done for today, just an hour this afternoon to go today. It whizzed by, I thought it would be hard to fill an hour and I only got halfway through the slides. Will speed up this afternoon

Chicken on a mission
I'm glad all went well for you this morning You can never have too much clip art in a powerpoint presentation
chocchick
You can never have too much clip art in a powerpoint presentation Wasn't quite fun so much as I had a captive audience that listened and so many things I could talk about. I have discovered online clipart. :D :D :D :D :D :D I am extremely honoured by the superpants and awed by their power. I will return them clean, but genetically engineered for added power :D :D :D :D :D :D Did go better, although I heard them talking about me on the stairs cos they didn't know I was there waiting! Luckily not too bad.Gave the bad ones looks occasionally when they talked when I was talking. They wanted to know if people got pulled towards our NMR research magnets (like MRI), or if I had spilt anything dangerous and was I going to discover something really (sadly no to 1st and 3rd points to 2nd). In fact I couldn't shut them up or answer one question before someone had asked another. Let the loose on E.coli tomorrow
chocchick
The experiment worked! Based on 2 days of experiments. They produced (harmless) bacteria that glow bright green under UV light. V exciting, my experiments don't normally work! I've started doing the teacher talk too

Louise
Well done chocchick It remninds me of a time I took a cat to the vet with suspected ringworm the vet had a student with him and he was all puffed up and got the UV light to show a similar effect which ringworm fungus often does to find that the sort my cat had didn't He was very embarrased Glad your worked so well it is a tribute to your teaching
