Guest
I saw a post on our local freecycle asking for a coop as someone was going to rehome some ex batts. I e mailed them to say we didn't have a coop to offer but we could offer help and advice if needed. Got a very nice e mail back asking if they could come and see our girls and ask some questions. So we've said yes, I'll let you know how it goes

Guest
think i'll make her a list of things we've bought and what they're used for and perhaps prepare an FAQ sort of fact sheet for her of all the questions we had when we started out. what do you think, is that overkill? Ain't Nobody Here
Oh no, I'm sure they'd be really pleased! I did that for my hen party visitors and they seemed happy. You might have found a new friend . (I hope they're nice - although they're bound to be if they want some ex-batts!)
Seagazer
That sounds fantastic Poet. Everyone could do with a "chicken buddy".

Gamebird
Well done Poet. That's very good spirited of you. If they're new to chicken keeping they are going to be really grateful to have an experienced person to hand.

BeckyBoo
I've just sent a snotty message to my local freecycle who posted an advert for cockerels looking for a new home following someones hatching experiment. Far as I'm concnerned, you shouldnt' hatch unless you can house the boys. Mrs B
Guest
That's great, well done you!! As I'm quite sceptical person, my advice to you would be to watch out and be careful. You never know what people are like and what their intentions are (some people are genuinely nice though). As they have advertised for a coop for free and you have stated you keep chickens, they may then think they can come back and get a £400 eglu for free overnight or when your out! Unfortunately a large proportion of all crime is undertaken by someone who knew the victim. I do hope it all goes well for you though... Good luck! We'll be careful

Guest
well, that went really well. The sun was shining and the girls were pottering around the garden when they came. I'd prepared a little fact sheet with what I considered to be chicken essentials and then a list of 'nice to have' items. I also included the name, address, tel no. and URL of where we get our supplies and the vet where we have the girls registered. I also included some useful web site adresses, including Omlet We also gave them a box of eggs. They stayed for about an hour and we just chatted about the girls and explained our cleaning routine and why we use aubiose. Told them about our flitrap and what to expect when the girls first arrive. They're getting their girls from Adele in Rossendale too, in May, so they can report back on how Bea is doing. Bea was out, hopping about with the others. I really enjoyed showing our girls off and hopefully they'll keep in touch and we can go and see their girls when they get them. I told them not to hesitate to phone or e-mail if they have any more questions. I'm tickled pink that we'll have chicken friends about 5 minutes away from us, cool! Guest
Just an update on this thread, you'll never believe it but it turns out that we used to play together as kids!!!! Up until I was 16, we lived next door to her nan and grandad and when she visited them, we used to play out together! Of course, when we moved, we lost touch. I had no idea it was her when I responded to the freecycle ad and we didn't recognise each other at first, but she said she had a feeling she knew me. A few days after she came round, she mailed me to say she remembered who I was! We did some reminiscing and we kept in touch and we went round to see her girls today. She got 4 ex batts from Adele, same place we got ours, so she was able to report back to Adele on Bea's progress. Anyway, her girls have settled in very well, unfortunately, as happens with chicken photos, they all disappeared as soon as the camera was pointed at them but this is me, her and the fluffy bum of one of her girls! They have a massive shed attached to their run and look very comfortable Isn't that a weird coincidence though!
