Chickens@61
really excited, as we are picking up our new chickens tomorrow at 3pm.. i am a bit worried about our two partridge pekins picking on them, but having read all the tips on introducing new hens we have everything we need to divide the run into two if required. i am thinking of putting the new girls in the run whilst the little ones are out freeranging (they can eye one another up through the wire) and then putting them all in together at bedtime and monitoring until they settle down.. their overnight accomodation is my childrens old playhouse, it is about 6' x 4' so they do not have to get too personal in there! what do you think - good idea/bad idea?? any comments gratefully received Edited May 3, 2008 by Guest

Guest
very best of luck the theory is that at night there shouldn't be any squabbling as they can't see each other and are too tired to pick on each other. Might be advisable to have a plan B, just in case. Hope it all goes okay.

Suzie
Best of luck picking up your girls. They really are great - you'll get lots of entertainment and joy from them. We got ours last saturday and let them free range for the first time yesterday. It was great letting them scratch around in the garden. Scooby
aw bless. I bet they are behaving like normal hens already, having a good scratch around. I've had our girls a month now and they are already showing signs of growing new feathers to hide their 'oven readiness'.

Chickens@61
well, so far so good.. they new girls scratched about in the run this afternoon, made themselves a dust bath and ate LOADS then at bedtime, i let the little ones in and they went in the house and upon the roosting bars. i caught the new girls (with a bit of effort ) and popped them in the house and they settled down in the straw. i keep doing five minute patrols, and i have not heard a single 'bok' as yet so i am hoping they are settled for tonight - who know's what tomorrow may bring though.. fingers crossed, xx
FruitandNutCake
Ahh! They are lovely. I just wish I had enough room to have hundreds, all free ranging happily! I think it is sad that they are allowed to get like that, with no feathers. But at least they have us to nurse them back to health.Well, I will do when I get mine!
