Guest
Anyone else get their June newsletter yet? This bit had me in tears, god bless Jane and everyone at the BHWT! Finally Whilst I don’t like focusing on the sad side of our work, one little hen really touched me this weekend: she came out from a Dorset farm and within hours showed signs of going down hill, eventually becoming semi-conscious. Mirri survived the night, although there was little improvement and the next day with her outlook bleak, I decided she would at least feel the sun on her back, so placed her on the front lawn. Unfortunately she didn’t open her eyes, but had just enough left to raise the feathers on the back of her neck to absorb the warmth of the sunshine… it was a heartwarming moment and one that proved to me again that every effort we make for each bird matters to that bird. Mirri peacefully drifted off, not having known the joys of free ranging, but at least she had a chance and experienced more than most caged hens Best wishes Jane x

Mel (& Paul)
But it gives you hope that chickens still have the chance to feel the sun on their backs - even for such a short time.

chili pepper
I feel it everyday when I look at my girls in the garden and compare in my mind to what I know they endure, when I see what the girls look like when we get them out of the sheds with the BHWT. Every single day they are out makes a difference to that little hen. Its why I say wait for your girls, they need you. The Dogmother
Me too. Jane Howarth really is lovely and plainly loves her chooks so much. How lovely to be able to go in peace and with grace and dignity.
BeckyBoo
She died surrounded by kindness and compassion which is how it should be. It's terribly sad that she didn't get a chance to experience real chickne behaviour but she was handled gently, cared for and died in the warmth of the fresh air. It's a real reminder of why we should do everything we can to ensure ALL intensively farmed animals are treated with compassion. Otherwise we are nothing more than savage animals ourselves.
