Tessa the Duchess
Probably wrong forum, didn't know where to put it. I buy all my chicken supplies from G Titmuss they also do the dry cat food I need for my new kitten, I do a big bulk buy every 3 months or so, to try and offset the delivery charge. I just got a delivery today, the standard delivery charge has risen from £11.50 to £17..80 I know petrol prices have risen and feed prices too, but this is a rise of around 80%. I am not happy. Guest
Not wanting to sound pessimistic, but things will only get worse... Generally speaking every year we pay more for products and receive less in return...
Olly
I use G W Titmuss too, Tessa, they are brilliant ... but HOW MUCH? Things really are going up. I'm going to have to find a local supplier ... even with increased fuel costs, it would be cheaper for me to collect (or even to drive to G W Titmuss shop). Pah, I was just thinking that I need to order another bag.
Mutrix Farmers
I think some delivery charges are a rip off, and so inconsistent across different suppliers. £17.80 sounds a bit steep but I suppose it's weight related. I take it they aren't close enough for you to drive to, alternatively search the web for a more local supplier?
Snowy
My organic layers pellets have gone up twice in as many months Were £10.40, last month £11 something, today £12.50!
Tessa the Duchess
I take it they aren't close enough for you to drive to, alternatively search the web for a more local supplier? I suppose I could drive there, probably a two hour round trip. I have in the past linked up with a local chickenkeeper and she drives there and back with our order, then I pay her a bit more for her petrol costs thereby saving the delivery charge, but we don't always coincide when we need stuff, so it doesn't work that well. I live in London we are not exactly surrounded with chicken or equestrian type shops, Titmuss is the closest and they stock absolutely everything. Tessa. bronze
could people who are close together buy in bulk?
Aunty e
Have you thought about going to Petsathome? They do layers pellets near me (I'd check before you go that your nearest store does) and they certainly have all the usual premium cat foods. I've taken to getting cat food delivered as it's free delivery on orders over £50, but they don't deliver layers pellets from the looks of things. They also do mixed corn, but I doubt you'd get anything like garlic powder or other chickeny things. Not sure where you are in North London, but there are a few stores in Essex and one over near Borehamwood from the looks of their website. Ange1
Northampton Petsathome do it as well. I asked the girl how much it was and she didn't know and wasn't bothered to find out Obvoiusly the chicken keeping bug hasn't caught on that much in Northampton! I'm a hop and a skip away from Central London, so Borhamwood and Essex are too far for me. I wish we had a PetsatHome near us but we don't Titmuss do pretty much everything I need and are really great, just v.v. expensive now. Oh well good job I like my chickens Tessa
Ain't Nobody Here
That's a big hike in price . Could you have a chat with your chicken keeper friend? Maybe you could arrange something that would suit you both?
Cinnamon
As we have a business in the building trade,we have noticed that both materials & the cost of deliveries has really gone up. Nightmare for us as some of the work we quoted & signed up 6 months ago, when things were cheaper We use plastics a lot & upvc is a by product of the oil industry,& we all know about oil prices, don't we? I see lean times ahead for us all,I am afraid.
The Dogmother
I filled up the tank on the van last night - nearly gave myself a heart attack! We've put up the mileage price on the expenses forms at work too.
TAJ
we just had a note today from the school bus company - the school bus pass for next year was calulated based on fuel price in March - it is costing them 10p per child per day on fuel currently, so they are looking at having to put a fuel surcharge on the bus pass. It's cost them £24 per bus per week extra just on fuel - over the 6 school buses that's an extra cost of almost £150 a week for a small local firm. ajm200
Have you tried phoning the small petshops in your local area. Some have started stocking layers pellets now that there are more chickens kept as pets. Our local petshop is only 50p dearer than the local horsey shop and will even split the large sacks into smaller bags for people who only have a couple of chickens. WitchHazel
Have you worked out how much it would cost you to collect? My car does approximately 7 miles to a litre of petrol. A litre costs me 1.20 at the moment, and this means that, for petrol alone (i.e. not counting other costs related to extra use such as tyre wear and servicing) is 17.4p. So for me, if the round trip was more than 100 miles, it'd be worth paying the increased delivery charge. (My csar is a Ford Focus)

(My csar is a Ford Focus) The inland revenue car scheme which pays (untaxed) mileage was 40p per mile of private mileage and I am told it has gone up to around 47p per mile so this is what they have calculated it actually costs us to run our vehicles in total with wear and tear etc as I doubt they would allow us extra. so you really need to work it as 47p/mile so for 100 miles its £47.00 so cheaper to get it delivered in the long run.
