hillfamily
Having to go into a period of belt tightening for a while I thought I would compare price of the contents of my Ocado delivery with the same items at Tesco.............. Well overall my Ocado shop was 7p cheaper Our nearest Waitrose (and Sainsbury) is a 20 mile round trip - we are right in the heart of Tesco Land. There's a massive superstore less than a mile from me and all the local convenience shops are now Tescos as well. For a while now Ocado have been price matching on branded goods and on Waitrose own brand, some items were cheaper than Tesco brand and some more expensive but overall it came out just a little bit cheaper :D So, don't have give money to Mr Tesco, can keep to an liveable budget and have found a few delivery times from Ocado that are both free and convenient :D Will keep price comparing over the next 2 months to get a true picture
chickencam
On normal everyday stuff I don't think Wairtrose is any more expensive than anywhere else. I t is a myth.
The Dogmother
I have started ordering from them Pam, and am delighted with the service and quality of the products, and because I'm not tempted when trudging around the shop, I am spending far less. My move was mainly due to ethics, but also for the convenience of not having to find time to go to Te$co and not having to give them my money. BeckyBoo
I wish I found it the same, I think if you're having to stick to branded items maybe they are less, they're certainly not less on organic stuff, wow, I nearly died of shock when I did a shop there once, although they have a HUGE range of organics and it's really good quality. But we're REALLY having to tighten our belts, and I mean really. Mum shops and Tescos as it's her nearest and as she's been in hospital I've been doing her shoping for her and getting some of our stuff there too, it is MASSIVELY cheaper than Sainsburys, I reckon if I go into real budget mode I can save us about £25-30 a week. BUT. I'm having, and I mean I have no choice, I have to compromise on my organic stuff. Which depresses and saddens me, we just can't afford it any more. I won't compromise on the meat altho I will now get our organic meat from the supermarket not the local farm, and I feel awful about this too, but have no choice. Hard times round here. Really hard. Keanie Bean
Have to disagree with you Mrs Bertie, I work in Sainsburys and although some of the stuff is more expensive more choice too the majority of their normal range stuff like pasta, bread, tomato ketchup, tea bags and sugar are all either similar or less at Sainsburys. They are all hiking thier prices up dramatically at the moment and I dont think there is any chance of it stopping soon either. We are really beginning to see the effects of climate change and simple overpopulation. We are learning to be happy with less and are really thinking about what we need rather than what we want. Egluntyne
I usually shop at Waitrose, but I was flabbergasted the other day at the price of pasta. I did a quick emergency shop yesterday at Somerfield on the way home from work and was amazed at how cheap it was. I got for £28 items that would have cost in the region of £40 elsewhere, and the fruit and veg were lovely. Our local Tesco and Sainsburys throw the veg and fruit about in an appalling manner, it is bruised and battered. Inevitably it will end up being sent to landfill. redfrock
I had quite a surprise when I tapped in my last Sainsburys shop into http://www.mysupermarket.com. Although I couldn't quite get everything by using Ocado, Sainsbury was cheapest, then Asda, then Ocado and finally Tesco was the most expensive . Ocado would probably have worked out cheapest if I was buying online because their delivery charges were more reasonable and had a greater scale from nothing through to £1 - £6. AmandaR
I do an Ocado shop every week through mysupermarket.com. This site compares your trolley against the prices of Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda (although Asda don't do home delivery). I often find that my Ocado shop beats the prices of the other three. If you are registered with ipoints, you can go to mysupermarket through them and earn points on your shopping. Also if you use a cashback credit card to pay - you can claw back a bit of money on your shop. It's not heaps but it all adds up in the end. I must get out more
WitchHazel
I shop through Ocado and find that it's no different overall to shopping online with the others, especially as Ocaoo's delivery charges are much more reasonable. I don't do a shop every week, I just start my list and then when i have a large enough trolley, I place an order. I probably place an order every 3 weeks (I buy my meat elsewhere) and I always have some online vouchers to use, which makes it cheaper. I've found their service far superior to all the others (I've tried tesco, Sainsburys and Asda home deliveries).
BarbaraJ
Does acado come from your local waitrose though? i seroiously doubt i could get half my shopping from our waitrose its small!
Mel (& Paul)
Ocado isnt actually part of Waitrose - it delivers from distribution centres rather than the Waitrose stores themselves (that would be waitrosedeliver.com) A downside of Ocado is they tend to sell pre-packed fruit and veg - so you cant always get the exact amount of what you want. The Dogmother
Mrs B, I used to buy all organic veg and fruit, then started buying it all from my local farmers' markets - it is mostly still grown to organic principles, and not treated with checmicals ansd pesticides. It is FAR cheaper and I'm supporting the local economy to boot! Give it a go.

ajm200
Our shopping bills actually went down a lot when we started to shop at Waitrose instead of Tesco/Sainsburys but only because the fresh produce keeps longer and the majority of our shopping is fruit and veg. We throw much less into the composter The drawbacks of shopping at Waitrose tend to be smaller packs of cereal, etc. Less variety and fewer cheaper brands. As most of our food is cooked from fresh and we use hardly any packets/tins or meat this isn't a problem for us. I have looked at ocado but prefer to pick out my own stuff after a bad experience with another food delivery company. If you sign up on their website they'll send you lots of vouchers over the next few weeks to try and win your business so you could make a good saving on at least one shop My Son loves the Ocado radio ads... but he's only little so can be forgiven. Cinnamon
I love Waitrose & would rather shop there than anywhere else, despite the fact that it may cost me more. But I am finding it hard to justify,as I have to drive past my local Tesco to get there (& its a big Tesco) & pay for parking when I am there. I also find that Tesco has more BOGOF offers - they had a great one on big bags of napolina Pasta the other week, & that sort of stuff is essential to us as a family of 4 with 2 teen daughters. The wine is cheaper too, & they always seem to have a decent drop on special offer
bellekatz
We dont have any waitrose stores anywhere near us but I love Ocado - use them weekly, spend no more than I would have done with Tesco/sainsbury and they are Sooooo reliable. I hardly ever get substitutions and I even got a phone call and a free bottle of wine this week when I had emailed to complain about the size of organic chicken they sent ( i had expected one to feed 4 - the one that was picked would be hard pressed to feed 2 - they were very apologetic and I get a free bottle of wine!)I have tried tescos, sainsbury and asda who all have shops locally but for reliabilty, quality and customer service I would go with Ocado every time. The Dogmother
We're not near any stores either Jayne, although there's one opening soon about 10 miles away. I have always been totally delighted with my deliveries, they even call me if they are in the area earlier than my alloted time to see if it's convenient to deliver then. I emailed them today because some soft fruit in last night's delivery was crushed at the bottom of the bag, and they have refunded the price to me - no quibbles - and promised to look into how they pack things. I also asked whether they will be increasing their free range chicken range to ready meals.. for when I get out of hospital and want something quick... and they are already considering it. Woodchick
I agree, I think Ocado are great and much better than all the others. The website's easy, my deliveries have never been late (and I've been using them for years), the staff are very helpful and prices are reasonable. I tend to use them for non perishable food as I prefer to buy my meat and vesg locally (and I agree about the packaging). I sympathise with the budget issues as it is tough and having been there form time to time you do have to make difficult decisions. Good luck. gooner.girl
I would use Ocado in a heartbeat, but I am one of those strange people who actually loves going Supermarket shopping Or any shopping really, be it Supermarket,Farmers Market or clothes. I like supermarket shopping to Cinnamon.... Don't let DH come with me anymore as he just wants to go 'straight to the things we need' rather then wander up and down all the aisles like i do... I do use Ocado occasionally though - they're the only place i have found do organic chicken nuggets - and i haven't noticed it being hugely more expensive at all - probably cos i find that i spend less that way as i don't browse and get tempted with little extras like i do in Sainsburys...
