Mel (& Paul)
Especially amusing to see a loved one out in the rain
Guest
You're meant to clean cars....... Doesn't the layer of dirt protect it from rust???!
Martin B
Mel do you have a hose pipe ban then?
Sheilaz
I'm with Shona on this, are you supposed to clean cars then? I thought that was what rain was for. So, I'm cleaning the car today, without leaving the forum. Also, I think clean water is such a precious resource, I don't like to use it wastefully whether there is a ban or not. Even when it's raining......our rivers take years to be affected by the rainfall. Oh look, I've cleaned the Eglus too.
chocchick
Mel do you have a hose pipe ban then? The idea is that he has chosen to save on water by using rain instead of a hosepipe. I'm guessing there is soap or something involved and he's not just standing in the rain watching the rain fall on the car!
Guest
I have thought of doing that many times - waiting for it to rain - soaping up the car - and letting the rain rinse it off... but it's never got past a thought... My worry is that what would actually happen is that it would stop raining as soon as I had stopped the soaping.. when it gets really bad - maybe we should all go out on the driveway and do the same with ourselves.... The Dogmother
I though of washing the van when it was peeing down last night, but then I though 'Nahhhhhhh'

With you there Shona in fact I learned in Chemistry at school if you mix water and metal you can actually grow rust

No hosepipe ban here but, yes, we are saving on water by using the rain and also using ecover products (cant you see my halo from here!) Every little helps
Chicken on a mission
No hosepipe ban here either and we are not likely to get one this year as water levels are up on last year but during the week I used the car cleaning trick on my windows and was stood out in the rain with my squeegie (sp?). You ought to be careful standing in the rain with your squeegie. You could get arrested for that
rachel19
wow, you lucky people...........our hosepipe ban never got lifted from last year.............my mum disconnected our hose back then and it hasn't been re-attached since.............she likes her car to have the *natural* look

rachel19
if you saw the colour of the sea round here most of the time you wouldn't be saying that
Mel (& Paul)
I do visit S-by-S occasionally for work - but never have time to visit the seaside - possibily not a bad thing then
Chicken on a mission
I have always been surprised that desalination plants are not used in this country. I haven't looked into why though.
Mel (& Paul)
I think (and I am no expert) that they are very expensive - they are used a lot in the Middle East - Saudi etc., but I guess they have very few other options - whereas we, to some extent do (i.e. limiting our water use / reporting leaks asap to the water companies etc.)

Lesley
My sister lived for 4 years in Grand Cayman and they have big storage tanks for water. I don't think it was all desalination though - I think some of it was shipped from the US like everything else The worst thing was that they didn't collect any rainwater - and there was no proper drainage for rainwater. A tropical storm just caused all the roads to be flooded. For an island with no natural resources at all, it was most strange
