Ardene5
Hello Can any one who has seen the photos , think it on page 7 say how old these bluebell girls are. We are not sure of 17 weeks because of the height of the of the comb. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you Best regards Ian & Valerie William & Harry Missy & Millie dogs girls Bluebell & Tinkerbell " The Bluebell Girls" 4 ex battery hens 2 x 1 x in hut
Egluntyne
I got my bluebelles on 4th July and they were 14 weeks then. They have grown enormously since arriving, but the combs are not quite as developed as your new girls, so I'd reckon that yours are perhaps around the 20 -22 week mark or thereabouts. FruitandNutCake
Their combs look really small - I'm sure my bluebelle was about 17 weeks when I got her this was the first day I got my 3 - and I'm sure they were between 17 and 20 weeks. Approx 17 weeks old. http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=25692 Bella at about 21 weeks old http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=25696 I don't have Bluebells but I could easily believe that your girls were about 18 weeks old now. Ardene5
Hello Everyone Thank you for your photographs and help in deciding the age of our bluebelle girls. We think it could be that we are comparing the to our ex battery hens who have large combs also as we do not know how they were kept or what they were feed. So we feel that we need to give them time to adjust. It is nice to see the scratching around the garden in their own area and getting used to every thing around them. Ardene5
Hi Everyone Just to let you all know that the Bluebells are fit and well. They have started laying lovely eggs and then we added an other 4 new hens to mix with the Bluebells and form a small flock. Slowly we got the remaining three ex batteries hens to mix with them which took some time. Whilst all that was going off, Ian laid a base for the new position for the 8' x 12' shed. Then he moved the shed 14 ft to the left of its original position whilst it was still built. By using scaffolding poles, 2 x 14 ft lengths of wood, a large car jack and a crow bar. Dug out an area 16 feet long by 18 inches wide by 18 inches deep to make a soak away for when it rain behind the shed and run. The soil was spread over an area 12 ft wide by 20 ft long, on top of this road style chipping then it was finally flagged. The area was raised up by about 7 inches, this is because the garden partly floods in very heavy rain. All this was being done because with the help of Hy Fly Hatcheries a Winter Run was being made 10 ft wide by 20 ft long, made in sections 10 ft long by 6 ft high, Ian then put on wire mesh he over laid it with opaque pvc inter woven with a special mess which is used by Hy Fly. It keeps the wind and rain out but allows the daylight through. Not all the section panels were covered this allows fresh air to flow throw the winter run. The run has a corrugated metal roof , the eglu is now inside the run along with various food and water containers, plus a bail of hay, two folding chairs , a plastic stool, the cube has been fitted to the side easy bed on top of the flags inside the run. So now all the hens live inside their new Winter Palace. As it has a walk in door to the front, this also provides the area that the hens can come and go from. We are just missing a few flags to go at the front of the run from the patio to the winter run. When finished we will photograph and put on here.
