Lapinou
Wow! I have only just read this thread and it is incredible! This forum has to be the kindest, most welcoming and friendly and lovely place on the internet I've ever been a part of and I feel really priveleged to be a member of such a wonderful group of people. The bluebelles are beautiful. I just can't believe someone could heartlessly put anything out with no protection in full awareness (or even hope!) that they wouldn't survive. What a cruel, painful way to end their lives, and I agree with the poster who said it would be better to wring their necks than leave them to that fate. Thankfully, neither option was necessary because of the kind and wonderful people on here and the OP working so hard to keep them happy, healthy and *alive*. Valkyrie
This is the first time we have read this thread and I am absolutely gobsmacked. Even when I read out to OH what the SIL was going to do he couldn't believe it either - only got halfway through before having to go, but finished it all tonight with those pictures. What a fantastic rally round and lovely to see the birds have a nice new owners and they look right at home already! It goes to show that for one heartless cruel person there are many more good people around. I can't understand why the SIL would do such a thing, and it is just as well the chickens were rescued from her - she shouldn't be allowed to have any pets. Well done to all the rescuers and would-be rescuers round of applause in order!

Ange1
Valerie, I've got to ask, is that purple paddling pool filled with sand, as a dust bath or water for the ducks? If it's water for the ducks, do the hens do near it or in it, I know they're not waterproof like ducks and can drown, but do they paddle! I'm afraid I think of them a little toddlers and on hot days I like to think that what they'd like is a paddle!!! I've a shallow tray that I put about an inch and a half of water into, they drink from it but I've not yet seen them hold up their frilly knickers and go for a paddle!!!! Ardene5
Hello Everyone, In answer to the question asked by Ange1 which read.................... Valerie, I've got to ask, is that purple paddling pool filled with sand, as a dust bath or water for the ducks? Ian was trying to see if the hens and ducks would live together what did suprise us was that the hens were drinking out of it. Also one did get very daring and went up the duck ramp and drank the water but she over balanced and fell in. She was only wet on her lower body below the wings So she was recued very quickly and dried spent an hour in our conservatory. Ian has sinse separated them so the ducks have their own space to the hens. The paddling pool was got from toysrus and has 2 small seats built into the pool which allow the ducks a step to get in and out of the pool. The Cube, Eglu and the area the ducks have is changed every few days this is to allow the grass to recover and the birds to have a new outlook on life. Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to BHWT. Ange1
That set up looks great Val, it would be lovely to have both living in harmony, so I assume that the test of them living together went okay, not too many fights?

Ardene5
Hello Everyone Ange1 wrote ...................That set up looks great Val, it would be lovely to have both living in harmony, so I assume that the test of them living together went okay, not too many fights? Ian is the one who moves the runs around to try and give the girls nice fresh green grass. First of all the only birds which have been together as a try, are our ducks and ex battery hens. It was interesting there were a few little altercations but nothing to worry about between the ducks and ex battery hens. Paddling pool is a Purple Hippo with a flat stone at the front so the ducks have something to walk up. Have now separated the ducks and hens for the moment, so we can concentrate on the 4 ex battery hens and the 2 bluebells girls. They are looking at each other though the eglu and cube cage bars. So to allow them to get to know each other before slowly getting them together. Then and only then we might try the ducks again once the hens have all settled in together. Alas in the middle of all this when nice things are happening, one of our ex battery hens past away she had a nice life after leaving the battery farm. Sun, treats, nice fresh grass to run and play on , was able to scratch around the garden, have dust baths and enjoy her time with us. best regards Ian & Valerie William & Harry Missy & Millie dogs girls Bluebell & Tinkerbell " The Bluebell Girls" 4 ex battery hens 2 x 1 x in hut
