Thornes have blue hens/egg layers coming in

Recommended Posts

I popped into Thornes (Letchworth) this morning and found out that they are expecting a delivery of what Frank describes as 'blue hens, smaller than Bluebelles, that lay blue eggs'. He didn't know the hybrid's breed name but they are coming down from Yorkshire.

I know a lot of you are looking out for blue layers so I hope this is useful (if vague!) info!

I got Tufty from Glencroft Poultry in Yorkshire. She is the same colour as a Bluebelle with a tufty bit on the top of her head like an Araucana. She is not laying yet but I was told she should lay a blue egg.

When I bought Tufty the guy at Glencroft hadn't put the Chicken on his website. He does sell the blue egg laying columbine but these were out of stock.

Glencroft Poultry were calling this Chicken a Corton Blue.

Tufty looks exactly the same as my lawford blue...maybe they're related. i got mine from warwickshire rare breed as was said earlier. She's laying bluey green eggs but also lays a couple of soft eggs a week. She is taller and very heavy compared to my other hens. I think the silver colour is beautiful.

Enjoy your blue egg layers all those that buy them.....they are fantastic. Everyone should have one! :D:D:D

Do you have any idea when they are due in? having just lost one i really need 2 more

I was there on Thurs and they were expecting the delivery that day but the hens wouldn't be going on sale immediately. I assume they would have been on sale at the weekend though.

If you're going, it would be worth ringing to check what they've got left as Frank told me they'd sold 300 hens in the past 5 weeks  (it could have been 500 in 3 weeks which would be :shock: )

Well I have collected my 'blue' girlie and another Pepperpot/Black Star.

The blue one is a very light silvery grey with slight rust markings on her neck and a longish tail BUT she doesn't have a crest. The man at Thornes , I think he is Spanish said there were 25 and 2 didn't have crests. My one was living on a perch because she was frigthened of the goldlines and getting bullied. So we had to have her didn't we, couldn't leave her there. Will post photos soon when they have had a little time to calm down. The Black Star has a lot of rust colour on her, she is very pretty.

Chooklady, that's Rob - he helped us choose our skylines because, me being awkward, wanted two that I could tell apart. It amazes me how they manage to catch the bird you choose amongst 50 others. Looking forward to seeing the pics of your new chooks.

Jo, I don't think I can sneak any more chooks past OH. You should have seen his face when we managed to hatch chicks without having a cockerel! Although Sylvie is broody at the moment and spends all her time in the henhouse hatching imaginary eggs, so he wouldn't notice another white chook. :shh:
