emmaw298
just went out to shut my hens in for the night and peggy has blood dripping from her tail end. On closer inspection (as close as I can get right now) most of the feathers and a large amount of flesh has been pecked away around her vent. the other 2 hens have blood all over their faces. Its making me feel sick to think they could do that to her! not sure what triggered it, they seemed fine a few hours earlier. I did notice one of the eggs was a bit blood streaked today so checked their vents and noticed peggy's was looking slightly stretched?? and had a small blue spot on it - guessed it was a haemarrhoid? but now Im thinking perhaps she has since had a prolapse and the others have gone for it. she is now inside in a box with some newspaper. she is very on edge, making quiet, rapid little chirping noises and occasionally dripping blood. I don't want to touch where it is bleeding incase I hurt her or introduce infection. will be a trip to the vet first thing in the morning but I don't know what to do in the meantime! help please! I don't have any rescue remedy but she is drinking water with some honey in.
half dozen
Very sorry cant offer any advice, just hope and pray she will be ok
mrs chook
Sorry I don;t know but perhaps just dab the area with some warm water on cotton wool wrung out or similar to clean area very gently and keep her calm, warm and clean as possible, possibly dab dry with kitchen roll?? If you have a drop of proper tea tree or lavender essential oil to add to the water that would help with cleansing and anti-bacterial/infection fighting. Poor little love. Take care and good luck for the morning, as long as she's clean and dry and calm you are doing all you can until then I think.
Guest
i would, as has been suggested, try and dab it with warm water on a cloth or cotton wool to clean it as best you can. have you got any antiseptic stuff you can put in the water too, dettol or something? Or have you got any antiseptic spray you can spray on her once you've cleaned her up a bit? keep an eye on the bleeding because if it doesn't stop then you may need to call the emergency vet. just keep her warm and quiet otherwise, poor love. hope everything is okay for you both. BeckyBoo
Nothing else to add really, it's late now so hopefully she'll roost and it will heal at least in a temporary way overnight. Don't be too harsh on the others, hens just love blood, yukky though it is Mrs B

emmaw298
thank you for your messages. she's asleep now. will have a little go at dabbing it, think i've got some savlon spray somewhere. what a day - the dog has developed a limp, my cat caught its first ever mouse, my sisters cat has an eye infection, my cousin has been rushed into hospital and now my chicken has a bleeding vent - what a day! cammy73
emmaw298, If you can get some purple spray..genetoin violet ?sp then spray her with this. mind your clothes and hands it stains....it acts as a disguise for the blood and is mildly anticeptic. If the chickens see blood they'll attack it...I don't know whether you bought her in overnight? if you've cat a box or cat carrier that will do, keep her warm and make sure she's got food and water.... One of my chicks has had this happen to her twice now....but once the fresh wonds have been cleaned and sprayed and dried off she goes back with the others the next day. Hope she's ok....take care Sharon x
emmaw298
thank you. I couldn't find the savlon so added a bit of salt to some warm water and bathed the area a bit. it looks really damaged. the top half of the cloaca (?sp) is all frayed and ragged and bits of flesh hanging off. she has pooed and more blood has appeared with that. the bleeding seems to have stopped now and she is all haunched and quiet. shes inside in a box in the warmth. i havent got any purple spray but will get some tomorrow. think i will need to go to the vets as i can't see how this will heal on its own with so much missing flesh. really worried they'll say they need to put her to sleep feel so guilty for not being there to stop it... RubyReckless
Camomile tea, when tepid, is a good thing to clean wounds with. I've got camomile teabags from our little Sommerfield petrol station, so i know it is easier to get hold of at odd hours than tea tree or lavendar. the gentian violet is a good plan too. And some nice sustaining food like a yogurt porridge and marmite toast? Don't feel guilty - you didn't cause it and you can;t be there every second of the day to watch them. You're doing all anyone could. Poor little thing and poor you too!
cammy73
Don't feel guilty.... Forgot to say I always put salt in the water.... I agree if you think she needs the vet, then best take her.... fingers crosed for her take care Sharon x

sparkysmum
Emma, I have absolutely no experience of such things but I know I would be frantic, so am sending you positive "stay calm" thoughts. Egluntyne
Poor girl. If it starts to bleed again I think I'd apply an ice pack ( frozen pees wrapped in a hanky) to the area. This sounds a pretty nasty injury. Please take her to a vet tomorrow. She might need stitching and antibiotics.
