Joojoo
That's just the best news to round off a Saturday evening  . I've been checking all day but fearing the worst so it's lovely to hear that they are both ok. Good luck in whatever action you decide to take next. Keep us up to date. Egg Lou
Just caught up with this and read with utter shock that something like this can happen in your own garden! So sorry for your family to have seen this but absolutly delighted with your happy ending
mayflower
Thank goodness she is safe and sound. As for the woman and her dog, firstly, she should have had the dog on a lead...as they were not in a park. Secondly, her dog has trepassed on your land causing harm and disruption. She should be told the consequences of her actions, all the anxiety and upset she has caused to you, your family, and the hens.
jackiepoppies
Superb news Now go find that totally irresponsible owner and let someone tell her about the consequences of totally thoughtless pet ownership. Personally, I would put a [?] human interest story in the local paper and cause as much embarrassment to her as I could. {After having done the police, dog warden thing] Jackiex
MedusA
I'm with jackiepoppies! A "shaming" story in the local paper to cause as much embarrassment as possible! Still pursue other avenues though. I am soooooo glad that Dot returned safe and sound and that Meg is doing OK. But I'd just like to reiterate that if the dog's teeth punctured the skin on either of them, they should still see a vet, in case they need antibiotics. Secondary infections can be nasty. I hope they both go on to live long and happy lives.
mostin
Hi there, so sorry, and then so glad it turned out to have a happy ending. Yesterday is the first day in weeks I haven't logged on and this happened to you! I can't belive it! I can't believe she didn't care and just walked off, poor little Dot, and Meg, well all your girls. I would want blood as well . We live on a cul-de-sac where everyone is lovely except one, our next door neighboor! She has a yappy dog from hell and it attacks everything that moves! She does nothing to control it and it has bitten every child on the street. We called the RSPCA but they could do nothing and told us to ring the dog warden. The dog warden was really good, she came round for a home vist, has made her put up a gate with a warning sign, she can't let the dog out on to the street without a lead and when it escapes, which it still does she has to leg it down the road after it as the next complaint will mean the dog will be taken away from her. To be honest I feel sorry for the dog and wish they would rehome it with someone else as she's never even taken it for 1 walk and I think it's just bored and undisciplined. I would contact the police and the dog warden as the dog shouldn't be off the lead like that, or be uncontrollable by it's owner, and i think the entry on to your property and the harassment and damage to your animals is a legal issue. I hope you get some justice soon and your girls continue to feel better soon xxxxxx P.S. Just had a thought, even if you can't find that woman it may still be worth ringing the dog warden as she may be a repeat offender and the warden may recognise a description of her or her dog and already know where they live. Worth a shot for chicken justice I think. Edited October 12, 2008 by Guest

jlo
Oh wow! So pleased to hear that there is a happy outcome. I have mentioned before that the police can take action and I have had a similar case in court where the dog owner was made subject to an order that the dog be kept under control (on a lead) when in a public place. Barkisland
Really pleased to hear you have your chook safely home. I am boiling on your behalf at the irresponsible dog owner though People like that give other dogs and owners a bad name.
RubyReckless
Delighted to hear the happy outcome for Meg and Dot! I strongly recommend calling the dog wardens. 18 months ago we lost all 3 chooks to 2 alsatians who were roaming free int the area. That was awful, although when i calmed down i was just grateful my 15 month old hadn't been out in the garden at the time. All three hens were ripped apart. I did find the owner and they built a new fence, so the dogs have not been out since, but it didn't make up for the loss of our pets. laurmurf
Update: Following all your advice i started by contacting the dog warden. I thought you'd be interested in her reply with my edited highlights: "I am sorry to hear about the incident involving your hens and hope that they are on the way to recovery. Unfortunately without any details of where the dog lives, I am unable to take the matter any further at this stage. If, however you do manage to find out where the lady and her dog lives please let me know as there is legislation in place regarding dogs which are not kept under proper control. With regards to informing the Police, they don't deal with animal to animal attacks and only very occasionally deal with dog to human attacks so you have done the right thing in informing us as we tend to deal with these kinds of incidents. My advice would be to make a note of everything that happened on the day so that in the event that you do find where the dog lives and wish to take formal action, we have some notes to look back on if we were to take a statement from you and your husband. If your hens received any visible injuries, it may be worth taken a few photographs just so that if there is a possibility of taking formal action at a later stage, there is some evidence of the injuries sustained. If you do manage to find out where the dog lives, please contact me using any of the channels listed below and I will be happy to discuss your options with you. I have entered the incident on our computer, reference number: xxx If you would to discuss anything further please do not hesitate to contact me." Interesting points on the police, I thought. We're going to track this dog and owner down and follow it up. I've written all the details down and we're photographing the girls too - although our blessing that they're not as badly hurt as they could have been means the owner is more likely to get away with it! Guest
i'm so pleased you found dot and that meg seems fine and i think you should pursue this but i just want to remind you that if the dog's teeth have punctured the skin of your girls, it would be wise to get them seen by a vet and perhaps get a course of antibiotics for them as dogs' teeth carry a lot of nasties that can potentially be fatal if not treated. all good wishes to your girls and your family. Cate in NZ
So pleased to hear that your girls escaped pretty much unscathed...it could so easily have been a tragedy. The dog warden sounds helpful, and very useful advice, thanks for posting that. I do hope that you manage to track down this irresponsible dog owner. The Dogmother
Phew! What a roller coaster you've been on. At least you have a point of reference with the dog warden, so that if the woman is tracked down, or appears again, any further reports can be linked to this on. I do hope that a story in the local press leads to some information to help you.
