Ever get the feeling you've been conned?

Recommended Posts

We gave away a two tier rabbit/hutch on freecycle over the weekend. As we got loads of replies, I decided to give it to what I thought was the best cause - I had a reply from someone saying their friend had a rabbit rescue on the Wirral - so gave it to him.

Even when they came to collect it, they told OH that they took in all kinds of waifs and strays.......I have just seen it on Preloved for £40.

Whilst I know we wanted to get rid of it and what happens to it is of no concern to me, it is a bit galling when I made the decision who to give to on a blatant lie!

I couldn't let it pass, so have just sent them this:

I have just seen the hutch that we gave to you, for your friend on the wirral, who runs a rabbit rescue, on Preloved........for £40.

Nice to see that our good intentions weren't reciprocated.

Are you absolutely certain it's yours? If so, report them for sure. Bloomin opportunists - makes me fizzing angry when people do things like this.:evil:

Absolutely - we painted it (badly!) and added velcro strips to attach cut up shower curtains during the bad weather and they are still on it.

That is awful. I've only put one thing on freecycle so far but was going to put AJ's double rabbit hutch on there.

The thing is how do you know who is genuine and who is not?

The last time I had a single rabbit hutch to rehome I actually phoned up the Animal Samaritans and they gave me the number of a lady who rescues them and she had the hutch so maybe I'll try that again.

OH is a policeman (as we know by now! ) and he says this is a crime. Its deception, as although no money changed hands between you two, they have obtained the hutch and are using it for monetary gain.

Obviously youre still in the same predicament as reporting it to the Freecycle team, but thought you should know.

Thanks KimmyCustard, unfortunately they know where we live (as they collected), so not sure that I would be comfortable reporting them.

Oooh I feel for you. I would definitely report them to the freecycle mods so they could monitor them, even if you want to ask them to take no action in this case.

Or you could report them to Preloved. Under their Acceptable Use Policy, users agree to comply with these provisions:

5.1 You will not use or allow anyone else to use Preloved to post any items or other materials that:

* do not meet the guidelines published at http://www.preloved.co.uk/guidelines/

* are false, inaccurate or misleading

* are fraudulent or involves the sale of counterfeit or stolen items

* violate the law of any established jurisdiction;

* are defamatory, libelous, unlawfully threatening or unlawfully harassing

* violate the legal rights of others

* embarrass or cause distress or discomfort upon another user

You may have grounds under several categories there.

Some freecyclers need a kick up their egg-laying parts. I'd encourage you to do something - the more they get away with it the more they'll up the stakes and rip off other people.:evil:

That is really shocking!

We recently moved (as you are all sick of hearing about by now!) and we gave our lounge furniture away on freecycle, it was all good quality and had cost several hundred pounds about two years ago.

The lady who we gave our stuff to said that she had moved to England from another country as her son was badly ill, I felt sorry for her and she said she would s"Ooops, word censored!"e the money together for a man in a van. When the driver arrived to collect the items there were several similar items in his van for 'the lady' too many for just one house so i am guessing that our stuff ended up with a landlord or in a second hand shop :( its just not what you are expecting when you think you are doing a good deed :(

I am afraid I now steer clear of anyone with a real sob story and give my stuff to someone who sends a more believable reply like the one I had that said 'I would like your bookcase for my art room - it will get covered in paint mind!'

Isn't it sad when people can lie in such a bare faced way. I keep telling myself that these people are a very small minority (not an easy thing to tell myself when I work in a magistrates' court!) and that most people are honest.

They will probably have rhino skin and will totally ignore the email that you sent them. Let us know if they do reply though!

I am shocked. I absolutely can't stand it when people cheat the system for their own personal gain. It is ghastly that people are using such a wonderful set up as freecycle to make money.:(

Could you contact them on preloved, hiding your identity of course, arrange to go and look at the hutch and then when you get there and they realise it's you shame them into returning it (then report them to free-cycle)

I think freecycled is great for so many reasons but the number of rude people on there get me down, let alone the outright deceptive!

Grrr don't blame you for feeling conned. On our Freecycle group you are supposed to say if you intend to sell an item. Personally I don't care what people do with stuff as long as it stays out of landfill. However, because they spun you a pack of lies about what they intended the cage for, they are despicable  I understand you not reporting them to Freecycle, they sound like very tricky customers.

This is one of the things that put me off freecycle and when I tried to raise soemthing similar with the mods on a local group they were very very difficult. Basically I could get the email to one who saw it but he said I hadn't sent it to the correct email address for the mods. When I did send it to the correct email address he claimed it never got to them but when I pointed out I knoew he;d seen it and could he please forward it to the others he refused to forward i and kept refusing to address imy concern unless I sent an email to the address he had given me and it got through :wall:

Despite that I still think you should try and report it to the mods but it will depend greatly on how good your local mods are as to whether anything will happen anyway.

I just reported someone to our mod for this and havn't heard a word back. I gave something away - had a lot of replies and the person who took it said "it was going to do them a huge favour". Yeah - its been listed 3 times on Ebay now. Last time they put a buy it now price of £150 on it!

It's not doing them much of a favour as they have to keep paying listing fees but it's against the rules. Looking at their listings I'm sure a couple of their other things have come off our local group too but not a word back from the mod.
