What a palaver!

Recommended Posts

Took 2nd son (14) to the doctors this evening as his relatively mild excema which usually comes up in the creases on his forearms has flared up almost everywhere - face, neck, shoulders, most of his stomach, top of legs, arms and is starting on his shoulder blades. GP diagnosed discoid (sp?) excema this time.

Well the prescription sheet was 2 pages long!

Twice a day I have to put on him:

Hydrocortisone on his face

Betnovate on everything else....wait for that to soak in

Then put lashings of an emollient soothing moisturiser all over him until 'he is like a slippery fish'.

She had also given him a special shower gel to use.

He is a nightmare to get out of the door in the mornings as it is..........but it does look very sore poor love. :boohoo:

What with the dogs op on Monday, you should see the amount of medication in our house at the moment!!

I can sympathise with your lad; I used to get it very badly too, and the steroid cream (terrible stuff) made the skin on my hands so thin that it tears easily and every winter, unless I am careful to keep them creamed, the skin splits and bleeds.

I found that cutting all SLS out of my shower gel/shampoo helped immensely, now I only get it in one patch on my left shin.

I hope that he gets better soon

Poor him and poor you. Adam, my son used to have really bad eczema when he was younger and we were for ever trying diffrent lotions and potions and wet wrapping him. Luckily, he seems to have grown out of it although he does get an occasional flare up when he's coming down with something.

poor chap!!! good luck to you both.

I thought you werent supposed to put sreroids on the face though... not sure but might be worth checking.

We have 2 steroid creams, the 1% for his face and the stronger one for his body - it was the GP that prescribed it - so presumably must be ok.

Thanks for your wishes everybody - he is a bit chirpier this morning - he had been quite down and tired over the last few days, so that is a good sign.......and makes for an easier family life too. :D

Doesn't sound like much fun, poor lad :(

My niece gets eczema and, along with her asthma, seems to spend her entire life going from one medication to another. When she went on an adventure week with school the medical bag was almost as big as the clothes one

Fingers crossed all the lotions and potions make him feel better soon :D

Hi

Sorry to hear about your son. Have you heard of wet wraps? If you can contact your local community children's nurses they may be able to advise. hydrocortisone for the face should be 1/2%:lol:

I was going to ask about wet wrapping too...it is supposed to be very effective. It is a palaver at night but some people say it is the only thing that really works.

I think once we have it under control, I will research more natural products as I wouldn't want him on this kind of medication long term.

A cousin of mine had it really bad and the only time it cleared was going abroad..........sunnier climes here we come!!! (only for our sons health of course! )

I have always suffered from eczema, at the moment I have a really bad flare up on my neck and have had it on one eye for over a year! The doc gave me steriod cream as usual said it safe to use on my eye, it hasn't help and has definately thinned the skin on my eyelid.

I have spent hundreds on various eye creams over the last year and nothing has worked but today I was looking at a web site called eczema voice, and several people on there recommend the Holland and Barrett Aloe Vera gel, I bought some at lunch time (only £2.59) and have put it on several times (stings a little bit) along with Oilatum face cream (which I use as a moisturiser) and my eye honestly already feels loads better. I'm really hopeful that this is something that is going to work at long last.

I wish your son better, I hope what ever treatment you choose works for him. Good Luck.
