Cinnamon
I am so pleased that Jeff Buckleys version of this song has reached number 2 in the Christmas charts, opening it up to be loved by a whole new generation of listeners. Both of my girls now have it on their play lists It is such a haunting song & he sang it with such emotion. I have a sneaking liking for the Rufus Wainwright version from Shrek too, but then again I do adore most everything he does
clootie
You have just answered a question for me, thank you. I didn't know who's version it was on Shrek. I liked that one best I think.

Olly
Wrong, wrong, wrong! Only the Master (and the writer) the fabulous, incomparable Leonard Cohen, can sing this song properly! I was privileged to see him sing it at the O2 last month and the memory will stay with me for ever. I'm afraid Jeff Buckley sings it too slowly and boringly for my liking, and I can't bear to listen to the X-Factor version ... but on the bright side, at least Leonard is getting the royalties, he needs the cash unfortunately! Snowy
I heard that he sold the royalties to it not long after writing Has that changed?
Olly
You could be right, Snowy, I hadn't heard that - oh well in that case, someone else is coining it!

Nah,Cohen doesn't do it for me I am afraid. Apparantly there are over 150 versions of the song out there........ Must be one for everyone
chickenanne
Is criminal to allow X-Factor version to exist! Jef Buckley version is one of my favourite things of all time. I may've dreamt it, but am sure I heard from somewhere that Simon cowel has the rights to the royalties for the Jeff Buckley and Cohen versions. I do like Alexandra's version, but still prefer Jeff Buckleys (although I thought it was him doing the Shrek one )
bronze
Yup the winner all round is Cowell. I've had the JB version for years so its become my ingrained favourite
Lesley
Leonard Cohen for me as well - but I do like the Jeff Buckley version .....
gracefruit
My favourite is John Cale's version, but only by a hair. Jeff and Rufus are also brilliant.

I was privileged to see him sing it at the O2 last month and the memory will stay with me for ever. Couldn't agree more Olly. I have never seen the X Factor, but I was genuinely upset that some unknown singer was going to ruin one of my favouite songs and probably be the Christmas No 1 grrrrrrr. I don't like the Jeff Buckley version either, but kdLang's version is pretty amazing. Tessa

bronze
Actually I think infidelity and all the other things the song is about are the wrong thing to be thinking about at Christmas but there you go.

chickenanne
H'mmm... I don't really see how it's festive or generous-spirited, but it's a great song. And so long as everyone realises that I am right and they are wrong, a good discussion is always positive!
Snowy
I love the song, but listenig to the words - isn't it about King David and Bathsheba? Or is it Samson and Delilah? Must go and google the lyrics!
Tessa the Duchess
I read somewhere that the song is very bleak and is essentially about the unsatisfactory nature of a physical relationship where love is not present. I could be wrong though. Tessa
Ms Marple
It's got to be Leonard Cohen for me like Olly and a few others. I too saw him a couple of weeks ago - fantastic!. Another pretty good version is KD Lang - anyone heard that if not utube it .

I think everyone's got an different view on this one, as Cinammon says, this is a place where you can voice your opinions. I think the song is about love/relationships, but I have read that every verse has a Biblical interpretation - the one about 'she tied you to a kitchen chair, she broke your throne, she cut your hair' is about Samson, etc. I'm not sure about some of the other verses this is a family forum after all. Apparently LC wrote 80 verses originally!
Devon
Both of my girls now have it on their play lists Mum, you're wrong. I don't have it on my playlist. Yes, sadly, I registered just to correct her.
