I love Freecycle ...

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a pet carrier to take some of the chooks to the allotment, and today picked one up from a freecycler! It's perfect, really substantial, and nice and dark inside so should be good for chook transport! I'm delighted! :D

Then I was talking to a friend and we were discussing things we wanted to put on freecycle. We ended up swapping - she got two pairs of shoes for her little boy and I've got a new bookcase and a slowcooker!! :D:D I'm double delighted!

Its certainly useful for getting rid of stuff - and although there are some no-shows, the majority usually turn up and its worth the extra hassle to save a visit to the tip - not to mention the satisfaction that something is being re-used rather than just chucked away and wasted.

I have a lovely pure new wool coat to give away and have arranged three times for people to come from freecycle but they either don't show up or don't contact me, its still hung up in my hallway!

I'm on my second attempt with our old kitchen table and chairs set. This time I put on the email - please only contact me if you are willing and able to collect. Someone is supposed to be coming tomorrow to get it but we will see.

Personally I also find it really annoying when people send you an email saying 'Can you ring me on.....' No I can't! - if you are getting something for free - YOU make the effort to make contact

I have had a few no-shows, but I am quite picky now about who I select. Anyone who replies 'yes, I'd like it' or 'Can collect tomorrow' without a little courtesy doesn't get it!

I choose the first POLITE reply, preferably one that gives a little detail about why they want it. I have just freecycled my breadmaker as I never used it and it was taking up too much room, and I had a nice email from the recipient a few days later saying that she'd made a loaf and thanks very much.

I still think the principle is a wonderful one, and I am prepared to put up with a few no-shows. I only use it for things (electrical items, windall apples for example) that I couldn't take to the charity shop - clothes, bric-a-brac and books still get donated to my local Cancer Research shop.

I love Freecycle too. Have got rid of a lot of stuff on there that would have gone to the tip, and yes, we have had people not turning up, which is annoying, but on the whole it has been good.

The last thing I got rid of was four tickets to see Lee Mead! I had bought them as my niece's Chrismas treat. Unfortunately my niece had the flu, and my daughter was ill as well so we couldn't go. We were gutted, they'd cost £200, there was no time to sell them on Ebay. The box office could/would not take them back. But at least a family had an evening out instead of the tickets being kept in the drawer.

The only thing I have asked for was a breadmaker for a work colleague. A lovely lady gave us hers, but unfortunately when my friend plugged it in the lights all fused so she did not want to use it again.

Thanks to all the tips on here, I freecycled my coffee tables and rocking chairs without a hitch :D

I was swamped with people just wanting them, but (following an idea on here) had said in the post that, if I had to choose, I would choose someone who had a particular need. They went to two sets of lovely people who showed up when they said they would and seemed genuinely glad to give a home to my cast-offs. Much more satisfying than taking them to the tip :D

There do seem to be a number of rather unrealistic wants though. My current favourite is someone wanting a double bed in as new condition, oh and if you wouldn't mind delivering it because they don't drive and they won't be able to put it together themselves so if you could just assemble it while you're there ...:lol:

Just had my second successful Freecycle transaction 8):D .

I put our upright piano on at 11.20 on Friday last night and by next morning had about 9 responses  . It was taken away this afternoon :) .

Bit sad to see it go really, it was a lovely piece of furniture. "Ooops, word censored!"ody ever played it though and it was just used as a hamster cage stand  .

Best 'win' I ever had was a wonderful electric guitar for my daughter. Its old, but in beautiful condition, with great polished wood :P

We give heaps away. With hubby being in the building trade, we have window frames for cold frames, wood for burning & other bits & pieces too.

The chicken poo is always a big favourite as well, & many people even offer to shovel it straight out of the pen, which saves me a job 8)

I had an amazing Freecycle experience on Sunday. Son's girl friend came downstairs to tell me that the double bed they sleep on had finally given up the ghost, it came from Ikea and we have mended the base slats so many times :( but this time the whole thing had collapsed. I sighed very deeply because money is tight at the moment, so had a quick look on Freecycle. What do you know....someone was offering a double bed and matress in really good condition  I replied saying I would love to have it, I was chosen as the recipient :) son and DH drove round to collect it, and approx 2 hours after my conversation with girl friend they had a 'new' double bed, I was grinning all afternoon :D

That is amazing. I wish more people would Freecycle because when I do go to the tip there are usually people throwing away things that look good enough to be used.

I once freecycled a tree, it was once our Christmas tree but an unusual one. We only had it inside the house once, but our cats got confused and were spraying on it. So we planted it in the garden, but it got too big for the space. A lovely lady and her husband came and helped me to dig it up, they were going to give it a new home in their garden.

Last weekend, I was given a pair of saucepans which will be ideal for soap making! :D

*sigh* I know what you mean, it does make me wonder sometimes!

Flat-screen TVs are another common 'want'. Maybe they get lucky at some point.

I saw an ad a few months ago where someone was after a first edition of the first Harry Potter book!! (Just after one had sold at auction for about £50k!!).
