Do you bother?

I think most people's run sit on slabs or just onto the ground, do you find it stays put? I know one person run came over in a gale during the winter but otherwise to they seem to stay where they are?

Just a bit worried as an offhand comment someone made "ah it'll be very light, sure it's mostly mesh" got me thinking...

Thanks

Aoife

I asked a similar question before buying my run from Aviaries4U. I got the following reply:-

"The run weighs about 150 kg and due to being mesh the wind is able to blow through, I have never attached any runs to the ground and they do not need to be."

Having now built my run (15ft x 6ft), I can confirm the overall structure is heavy and shows absolutely no sign of movement.

Mine will be a 3 sided run sitting against a garage wall. I'm getting battens (sp?) to attach it to the wall, presumably to make it as stable as a 4 sided run rather than prevent it moving.

He says that the wind will blow through the mesh but I'll be putting tarpaulins in place for when it's windy and wet so that might make it more likely to move :? .

My WIR is built off four concreted in fence posts. FIL insisted this was nescessary but i am not so sure.

Funny you should say that. My OH is insisting on doing just this to set my mind at ease. But it probably won't be necessary.

I spose i haven`t got the worry of what if's and also as i don`t intend on moving house ever again (unless i win lottery) it doesn`t make any difference. :D It used less wood too so cost less than building individual panels. I have yet to tot up the final cost but i think less than £150 so a considerable saving on a ready made one. :D

I would say anchor it without a doubt. My run is big (3m x 4m) made of thick heavy wood, has 16g wire all over it. It is sooooo heavy. My garden isn't a wind spot or anything and it flipped in the gales not so long ago. Honestly when I saw what had happened I could not believe it. Everyone I know who has seen my run could not believe what happened as it is so heavy. We have it anchored now.
