One Man Banned
Well what a week it's been I have missed you all! Took the caravan and Joe and Molly to North Wales for our break, got there in just over 3.5 hours nice drive up across Wales to get there. I was slightly disappointed upon arrival at the site as you pass through Trawsfynydd - thinking I recognise that name. Two seconds later we arrive at the site, two miles from the Nuclear Power Station! That wasn't mentioned anywhere!! Still it's not spoilt an amazing week - did plan to go up Snowdon on the railway but they don't take dogs on the train, so that killed that plan, and Holyhead is a dive. I would have thought that the Tourism Office would have made more of an effort to promote the Menai Bridge as you enter Anglesey (there's just nothing about to mark this amazing bit of engineering!) So after another leisurely day on Friday we took the Ffestiniog Railway in the morning and drove to Llangollen in the afternoon as when I went there by boat many years ago I quite liked the canal there! We walked from Llangollen to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and back in just over 3.5 hours - such a lovely walk to - but Joe was too afraid to walk over the Aqueduct himself and this is why..... Yes there is a sheer drop on the side with no railings. Such a lovely place don't you think!!!
theherd123
WOW! Sounds like you have a fantastic week! What a view from the aqueduct! Im not surprised Joe didnt want to cross it! OH & I were going to go on a narrow boat holiday and cross that aqueduct but went to see his sister in Torquay instead! Hope you are feeling much relaxed! Lesley
Nice to see you back Andrew - you should have told me you were going to Anglesey - I know it like the back of my hand and could have told you about all the nice places (but then I would have to kill you because we are keeping it all secret and in the family!! ) You could have called in on my Mum and had a piece of cake ... and Holyhead is 100 times better than it used to be We're going to Anglesey in October - I can't wait, we haven't been at all this year and I'm really missing it (oh! and my Mum! )
Popcorn
Oh, I feel a connection with you Andrew! We go to North Wales every year either in the caravan or weather permitting, the tent. We love Llangollen. It's a lovely little bohemian town and we try and catch the Fringe festival in July. The aquaducts are mighty high aren't they. I'm with Joe. I have to hold my breath and not look down when we walk across them too. Have you been to the one in Trevor? There's a nice one in Crich too which is followed by a tunnel which is a quarter of a mile long. I've walked it once, and would NEVER do it again. The saying, 'light at the end of the tunnel' comes into it's own there! You should have took the plunge and walked up Snowdon. It's not as bad as you imagine, and the feeling you get when you get to the top is just fantastic. There's a little cafe halfway too for toilet stops and tea and cakes. And they're proper mugs of tea too. So glad you have come back refreshed. Holidays are just great when you get exactly what you wanted out of them. Nice to see you back

Cate in NZ
Glad to have you back Andrew, and it sounds like you had a great holiday. Stunning photos..... not sure that I could have walked the aquaduct either I've rarely been to N.Wales... a geography field trip in my youth to Machynylleth (or however that darned town is spelled ), and I've driven through it a few times, but I had family in S. Wales and spent part of my childhood living in a small town between Carmarthen and Llanelli. Still got an extremely good friend in Swansea But I don't go back there very often these days. Pity really... it's a beautiful country
Guest
I've got to agree - North Wales is a stunning place - we wnet there on holiday this year, and many times before - chookiehubbie comes from Lladudno, so an annual pilgrimage has to be made. Stunning scenery when the weather is good, and pretty nice when it's bad too!
One Man Banned
I admit it was good. We were quite lucky in choosing where we pitched the caravan so that we we facing out across a field and right up against the stock fencing and all the sheep walked by the 'van. (also they were very white, so must be something to do with a little radiation leak .................) The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the one at Trevor Gina, I went over it a few years by canal boat and the one at Crick too - that's really nice. My dad had abseiled off Crick Aqueduct when he was in the Army and they still do now, You can even see the wearing to the stonework etc. One of the best tunnels on the canal network is Braunston, (where our own boat was moored) as its quite long (no light at the end for at least 30mins of cruising) and also has a slight "S" bend in the middle as they built from both ends and nearly missed joining up! A xx
The Dogmother
Believe it or not - I am terrified of heights - I have taken a narrow boat ovet that aqueduct We love that area too - used to go to Bala a lot when was with my ex, as he was a whitewater instructor there so I got to go rafting too. Have been back there since and love that part of the world.
HappyHen
Braunston tunnel - now that's scary. Hired a narrowboat for the first time this summer. I would NEVER have believed that 2 boats could pass unless I'd actually experienced it. I'm so glad OH was in charge! Had a great few days and would love to do it again. We did lots of fishing and taught the kids. My 12 year old caught a fish big enough for dinner! It was beautiful with a glass of white. Can't beat that for freshness. Water to pan in 20 minutes! Mrs Frugal
I know Bala Clare! Camped there as a teenager when our tent nearly got washed away!! Andrew, that's WAY TOO HIGH!! I'm with Joe on that! You wouldn't get me up there if you chased me with a big hairy spider! No way! Nice to have you back again and glad you had a great time. Love the Ffestiniog Railway!
