Lesley
Yup, he's going back to the farm, so is one of the barnies, but that won't be eaten. It will if it's a cockerel
The Dogmother
True enough, but you might be able to sell him online.
Lesley
Yes, I will try that first Clare - but I really don't need any more feathery alarm clocks The bantam cockerel is the noisiest of the three

The Dogmother
Re sexing the Barnie chicks: Having consulted the experts on the pekinbantams.com forum, they think that I have a pair - the one with the bigger comb and smaller tail is a lad. Tamsin
I saw your post and pictures The pekin forum is more serious than us lot here Some of the members really know their stuff
The Dogmother
Yup, they're hardcore chook keepers, and very knowledgeable. A nice bunch, just not as chatty as us.
SeramaSilly
Clare the chicks are even more gorgeous and Biscuit looks more like George now than George does!!
The Dogmother
Thanks Sophie. Lavinia and the chicks have been freeranging with the others for a couple of days now, and Biscuit hasn't managed to catch any of the chicks yet. There was a bit of a problem with Lily asserting her dominance and she pecked Lavinai's comb until it bled, it was drying out so I decided to leave it to heal on its own. Herbert is now enormous - taller than his mum, so I will ask Lesley and Carl if they want to take him back. I'll hang onto the two barnies for now to see what they turn out to be, just in case we were wrong with the sexing> i hope that one of them is a cock beacuse Lesley was hoping for one. I don't think she'd be able to breed it with the hens that they've got because they're too closely related, but perhaps they are thinking of selling him or getting in some unrelated hens. I'll try to take some more photos this weekend if the weather allows.

Lesley
I've got a hen version of Herbert - a pale yellow but turning white. We've followed on from Clare's original name for Herbert (Herbert Sherbert) and called ours Sherbert. We also have another Herbert

The Dogmother
I will probably hatch more next year Choccy. It has been a lovely process and I'd love to do it again. Lesley seems to prefer the broody mum approach too, and personally I think that the chisk are bigger than those that have been incubated.
