Snowy
I know this has been done before, at least twice! But try as I might, I can't get the search facility to find it!! I've tried sat nav, GPS and satellite navigation but no searches returned Soooo ..... Anyone got any recommendations? Or anyone got a better search and can find the topics for me? Pretty please?? Going on holiday tomorrow and just tried charging up my VDO sat nav only to find it is caput (Normally I'd do the map reading and OH drives but I'm on my own tomorrow and need a navigator!) Egluntyne
I have a TomTom One . It isn't all singing and all dancing, but it does the job.
ali-s
I've also got a TomTom One after reading about them on here I've used it lots of times. Strangely though the satelities cannot find our house and you get directed to a location about a quarter of a mile away think I will change the name of our cottage to Brigadoon
Chickvic
We've got a basic Navigon (about £60) but it does the job. Makes life so much easier especially when finding chicken sellers
Redwing
I have a TomTom One, its on its last legs but has served me well for about five years now. I paid hundreds of pounds for it then but luckily they have come right down in price now! Like Egluntine says they are not all singing but they are easy to follow and do the job well. I tried and returned two others before settling on the TomTom
Omletina Kyckling
I have a TomTom 920 and it's fabulous. How long are you going for? You could borrow mine if you need one...if you can collect?!

Snowy
Thanks all, looks like I'll be going for the cheapest possible, or the Tom Tom 1. Like you say, for the few times I would use it it only needs to be basic! Thanks for the offer Diane. We'll be OK this time though.
mostin
I've found Tom Tom the most user friendly of all the makes I've tried so far.
Lewis
We had a Navman one a few years ago which was rubbish and would take about 1/2 an hour to find satellites to be able to plan the route. Dad bought a new model Navman this year, and it is much much better and gets a signal within seconds. I still think TomTom's are better from using my Nans
Olly
TomTom for me, too. I've got an iPaq PDA and I bought it as an add-on to that, with a separate GPS receiver. The GPS is wearing out (so is the iPaq) and I'll definitely buy TomTom again when it's time to get a new one.
Avalon Fantasy
The best one in the whole world is the one I use in my not so humble opinion, my husband has another sort and even he says mines better. http://www.smartnav.com/ You press the button someone says..hello there, how are you and where are you travelling to today.. I say where I fancy going and they say thats lovely..I`m just sending the info now have a lovely day..bye.. Now, this particular one is great for many reasons, if you get lost or worried you can press the button and speak to a real person! They can pin point you to within a foot, they can also send any emergency services directly to you, and should you have missed a birthday you can buzz them and they send chocs flowers ect... Ok so I know thats frivolous but the feeling of complete safety, knowing I can talk to someone if I go wrong or something happens is brilliant. I have had this fitted in every car since I first heard about it, and certainly wouldnt be without it ever again. They have extra things that you can read about. susanbb
I have a TomTom One . It isn't all singing and all dancing, but it does the job. I also have one and English Jane gets Scottish Susan everywhere Would be lost without it
Patricia W
I've got a Tomtom and a choice of voices - Joanne Lumley is my favourite.
kannie
There seem to be a lot of versions of the Tom Tom - will the cheapest do? Is it worth paying extra for additional features? Which version is best???
mostin
If you're not planning on going abroad, just go for the cheapest Tom Tom. they all come with mapshare software, so as soon as you get it home, you log on, with the pasword you get with your Tom Tom and make sure you have the most up to date map available. The software will update you incase you unit has been sat on the shelves for a while.
shaunw
I just got shouted at from the other room by Mostin. She knows just what to say to get me interested. In fact like her if i shout chicken she drops what she is doing and says "where, where is the chicken?", that is just me with my tomtom. I am somewhat a bit of a self proclaimed expert on these things. I have a number of different sat nav programs and units i have tried over the years and can say with absolute confidence that tomtom is the easiest and most user friendly one. If my mum and dad can use it, then i can assure you anyone can. The tomtom menus are much easier to navigate than others i have tried (Route 66, RAC, Navman, GArmin, Audi in built, Renault in built). but like anything, its what you get used to. For example how many of you stick with the same brand of mobile phone year after year because you get used to the menu system and the way they work.......i am a nokia man for example. With the tomtom's i have now got to the point i can do repairs if they crash (which happens very rarely but nevertheless it can, as with any computer). So if you are choosing a tomtom for UK use, buy the basic one but as Mostin pointed out make sure it comes with "mapshare" and make sure you get a "latest map guarantee" and use it. Mapshare means you can hook it up to the computer with tomtom's own software, tomtom home, and it will automatically update roads if they change and someone has informed them about it - like a one way street becoming 2 way or a road becoming a no through road. Latest Map guarantee is that when you buy your tomtom it has probably been sat on the shelf for a couple of months, or more. You can then connect it to the tomtom home program and if there is a later map available it will download and install it for you so you have the latest map on your system. Please make sure you use this if you have it as it will only last for a short period of time and is worth £50-£60 (the cost of an updated tomtom map). I would recommend the Tomtom One Classic here on play.com for £109. it will be uptodate and has a great new window mount called easyport which is permanently attached to the tomtom unit so makes it easy to move from car to car. If you want one for a tighter budget then the Tomtom One v3 will do a very good job. this one is only £68.99 including a free carry case and also comes with latest map guarantee and mapshare. Hope all that helps. shaunw Edited April 14, 2009 by Guest
shaunw
Also i have just found that you can get the UK and Western Europe Tomtom One classic for £111.15 inc delivery on Amazon here.

jlo
I wish my OH had got a TomTom now He bought a Garmin a couple of years ago and it is ok. He now has a posher one where the lady is polite to him in his new car so I have inherited the Garmin. I don't always like the way it takes me and it bugs me how it keeps going, "Recalulating!" It clearly needs updating as it kept wanting to take me on roundabouts on the A419 in Swindon today and they had obviously been changed to a flyover and it didn't like it at all! Unfortunately that will happen with all sat navs so dont feel too bad. Roads are being changed every day so as soon as a new map for the sat nav is released it is already a few months out of date.(just like a road atlas). Lesley
We had an awful Navman which could never find a signal - we now have a Tom Tom One - Europe and it's been really good so far.
missuscluck
Grrr. We have just used a loaned one for Florida. It was a Mio. It kept saying 'route recaluclation' all the time. We switched it off after a day or two as it was more trouble than it was worth. We went to Universal Studios and we were at the pay gate and it was still telling us to turn back. I hear TomToms are very good.
shaunw
I put Florida maps on for my neighbour last year before he went on his hols and added all the theme parks as a POI (point of interest). He said it was great and took him to the door everytime. TOMTOM rules!!!
