I am not at that stage yet, but I was closely involved with my mum on her journey.

As she had a couple of friends who had been on HRT for 10yrs (!) and still when they came off the HRT they still had to go through the flushes/sweats she did not want to go down that route.

She visited a qualified homeopathic doctor who asked her roughly 100 questions about her health, life style and her life. From this she made up prescription for her - which she got on famously with.

She also found a recipe for flap jacks (yummy) which she had one a day and it helped with the flushing.

I can remember she also got something from Hollanand and Barratt - Soyaflavin or something - cant quite remember the name and what it did - I will ask if you like. But again it helped.

Unfortunately there was nothing that helped with flooding - just need to carry extra clothing and wear lots of towels.

Mum was roughly 6 years, but remember everyone is different and you could be nearer the end than you think. :)

I also think it helped for mum to speak up about how she was feeling.

Keep your pecker up!

Anjx

I was on it for a while, in various forms, but none of them suited me and in fact made it worse!

I decided to go cold turkey after a while and then had a hysterectomy (left the ovaries in) fro another matter 9 months ago. The Big H was the best thing I ever did, the menopausal symptoms come and go and I just treat the symptom.

I did not opt for this but went through things naturally and really apart from the flooding and a few hot flushes at inopportune moments I was fine and am out the other side ( I hope) = mind you the aches and pains would maybe have been helped by the HRT instead of being a bit of a crock!

I'm starting to become irregular (before you could set a calendar to them) and getting what I think are hot flushes, so I think I'm heading for the change. I had heard of most symptoms but never of 'flooding' - can someone explain to me what it is? (Sorry for being such a 'foreigner'.)

I had a hysterectomy when I was 43, I immediately started experiencing menapausal symptoms, I started to take HRT and was on it for 15 years, no problems. When the scare about HRT and breast cancer occurred, about 6 years ago, my doctor made me come off it immediately, back came the hot flushes and I felt I aged about 10 years overnight. I would love to go back on it, but my doctor flatly refuses to prescribe it :(

Please please please can I have flapjack recipe your mum used. I wont go on HRT as mum was on it and she got breast cancer whilst on it BUT she probably would've go it anyway. i just wont. I am moody bad tempered and scatty most of the time, I get hot but not flushed and strip off in shops and promptly put it all back on when we get outiside. OH says I have a funny metabolism. he dont know 1/2 of it. From experience as a nurse I've known women be on it 10 yrs +. Its a risk thery want to take. Until my op is out the way and I know what is going on in my uterus I am not going to do anything. Tkae starflower oil and felt I was better on that than EPO. we will see

Spooky - mum just phoned, she thinks she still has it and will look it out. :)

Here's a HRT cake recipe;

LINDA KEARNS HRT CAKE

This cake is 95% fat free – no fat is added as the nuts and seeds provide this.

Ingredients:

4ozs/100g Soya flour

4ozs/100g wholemeal flour

4ozs/100g rolled oats

4ozs/100g linseeds

2ozs/50g sunflower seeds

2ozs/50g pumpkin seeds

2ozs/50g sesame seeds

2ozs/50g flaked almonds

2 pieces of finely chopped stemmed ginger

8ozs/225g raisins

½ teaspoon nutmeg

½ teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground ginger

15 fl oz/425ml Soya milk

1 tablespoon malt extract

Method:

Put all the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Add Soya milk and malt extract, mix well and leave to soak for about 30 minutes.

Heat the oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5. Line a small loaf tin with baking parchment.

If the mixture end up too stiff, it should have a soft dropping consistency, stir in some more Soya milk. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1¼ hours. Test with a skewer and if it’s not cooked, allow 5-10 minutes more.

Turn out and cool. Eat in thick slices with Soya spread.

I found it on this website - http://www.laurelalexander.co.uk/membersarticles/article_hrt_cake.php

I have been on HRT,patches for 7 years following a hysterectomy in 2002. Cant remember if they removed my ovaries or not but they did remove my cervix. My patches only have one hormone in them not the combined hormones. I am now 51 recently had check up with the GP, who was happy foe me to stay on them for now....but emphasised that I would have to come off them in my early 50's so I'm trying to prepare myself......can you get them on the black market??????:lol:

I chose patches rather than tablets as I read somewhere they had less side effects as they are absorbed in to the blood via the skin........dont know if thats true though......they work for me I would never remember to take a tablet every day :oops:

Charottechicken that recipe sounds really familiar...

Ooh, can you remember where from? It was virtually top of the list on a google search.

It does look really nice so I may pick up the few things I don't have in my cupboards and have a go at making it, seeing as a hysterectomy is looking likely for me pretty soon :?

I bought all sorts of seeds not too long ago as I was going to try making a Burgen bread in the breadmaker, but the chicks took over the kitchen

I know what is in the link that Rhapsody posted - I decided some time ago that HRT woudn't be for me.

I take Menopace ......when I remember  and make flapjacks with seeds in.

The hot feelings aren't too bad - I'll just keep flinging clothes off :D

I will try the cake esp if fat free, bit worried OH may eat it too. Will have to keep away from ES cos of nut allergy. I have tried soya but not that keen. I do need to look at my diet as I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to trying things.

I decided not to go down the HRT route as it just seems to delay the inevitable.

Instead I took Menoherbs combined with Australian Bush Woman Essence and the hot flushes, aching limbs and depression disappeared.

I think I stayed on them for about 18 months and now I seem to have come through the menopause and out the other side with no more symptoms.

The Australian bushwoman essence sounds very " tough". Visions of being able to lift the sofa with several bodies on it to vacuum under it. Joking aside i will google it and see what it says. thanks always ready to hear of new remedies

I have tried various Natural remedies, particularly all those phyto oestrogens along the lines of soya and linseed. Took Macafem imported from USA etc etc.

I had two years of intense hot flashes and aching muscles before I threw in the towel.

I haven't had an unbroken night's sleep in two years and on some days I ached so much I had to roll out of bed and could hardly lift the kettle. I ran the London Marathon in 2006 but my running dropped off so badly that I had to drag myself round a fairly easy 2 mile stretch a couple of times a week, often in tears. I used to do 30 miles a week with one run being 12 or 13 miles.

I just goes to show how the menopause affects people in different ways.

My mother still has the aching limbs and lethargy at 84 and her hormonal changes made her a broken woman. My internet research has thrown up many examples of lifelong symptoms.

The thought of a never ending battle in my retirement years was just too much.

I take a combination synthetic pill as I am quite aware of pregnant mare products and would never allow myself to take those.

Even two weeks have made a spectacular difference. I am sleeping better and have just got back from a decent run.

I know it's not for everybody and I am aware of the risks but quality of life is so important.

I guess I will have to stop some day and I've bookmarked all your remedies.

I can imagine myself as an Australian Bushwoman .... wonderful.
