A trip to the dentist

Recommended Posts

Over the weekend my crown, which I had done about 14 years ago,has been playing up :?

I am here now waiting to leave for a trip to the Denist

I HATE going to the Dentist - well, I don't think anyone likes it,do they

But I am a right wuss- I cry at the sight of the needle,& generally make a bit of a twit of myself in the chair.

To top it off,I have a cracking stress headache from just worrying about it

Can someone please go for me.........

Good luck Sarah. Close your eyes and pretend you're somewhere else!

I didn't go to the dentist because of a serious phobia for 12 years and the day I decided I would go back, I sat crying like a baby in the waiting room and actually got up and headed out for the gate, preparing to do a runner, I was so terrified but even though I had loads of treatment to get my teeth healthy again, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and my phobia has gone now. I even had a wisdom tooth pulled out a couple of years ago and didn't flinch when they put the needle for the anaesthetic in. A replacement crown is next on my list once I've saved up enough money.

Totally understand this one, yesterday I was doing the same thing.

I went after not going for several (well about 5) years, had a mouth full of what tasted like bleach and that finally put me for until I could stand the pain no more.

As soon as I opened the door I could feel my heart racing and panic set in, why do they all smell and sound the same?

Just need two crowns and a load of fillings, booked in for 2 more hours and thats just starting the crowns.

I've had enough I want to get off comes to mind.

Good Luck Sarah.

This could turn into a horror story thread about dentistry!

I have a phobia and hadn't been for 15 years!:oops: (Lucky to have such great teeth), but 5 years ago my only filling dropped out and I had to go. They were brilliant, really kind and understanding with me, made me close my eyes when they were getting out the needle etc. Only problem was, that I'm not afraid of needles, or the injection or the thought of dentistry, but the pain..... :?

He gave me an injection, I waited for it to "numb" but when he started I still felt him drill, so he gave me another injection, then another. At this stage with the drilling, and me trying to climb through the back of the chair he told me I was at the legal limit of what he could give me, so I could either let him carry on gently (it was nearly done) or I could come back and he would give me a different sort of injection. I let him carry on. I was a wreck!

It turns out that I am allergic to adrenalin, which is the drug they use. 1 in 10,000 people are, and for them it has no effect whatsoever!

My mother used to always complain about what a baby I was at the dentist. Imagine my phone call to her that evening when I could finally explain why!

Anyway, he promised me that if I ever needed work doing in the future they could use something else..... but I haven't been back since :?

Good luck Sarah!

I'm completely phobic about goint to the dentist and havn't been for years. My children all go no bother and had teeth out (overcrowding) prior to braces without flinching - it makes me so ashamed. If you said to me you can go to the dentist tomorrow or have a baby i would choose to pop a baby out....easy! And then strangely I can never understand why patients are frightened of me when I approach them with a needle....

All done - I was in & out in 5 minutes!

It seems that my crown, being harder than the tooth itself, had shifted slightly due to years of chewing,so as I was biting down I was making a gap between it & the tooth behind - hence the pain.

He simply rounded the top off, checked with a biting thingy that I was now all aligned up & that was it.

What a silly fuss I made

The crown should last for a good few more years too (so I can start saving up for its replacement now :roll: )

Glad I am not alone in hating going to the Dentist, although mine is very nice ,& puts me to ease by being sort of flirty, but not in a creepy way :D

Sorry Sarah, but friendship has it's limits :lol::lol:

To be fair I have a gorgeous dentist. I can't say that I actually enjoy going to the dentist, but he's a lovely man and I trust him implicitly. I've suffered in the past from bad dentistry, but hubby went to our current dentist's Dad as a child, and knew Adrian (the dentist) back then as they're a similar age. We've tried other dentists, but we have such confidence with Adrian that we'd never change again. And the children have never seen any other dentist, and have no fear at all about going to see him. It's a bit of a journey going to see him- a real family expedition as he's no longer particularly local, but well worth it.

Thank you Mel & Paul

I go to the dentist regually, but its always the same, I'm in the chair mouth open, screwing up a handful of tissues, and tears weeping from my eyes, and often my tongue starts pushing his hands/fingers and equipment out of the way. I can't help it, but its just the reaction I go through.:roll:

The most embarassing thing is when I see him in supermarket, I go red and very bashfull and he just grins.:lol:

All these dentist stories...I haven't been for a few years and keep trying to build up the courage to go. What makes it worse is my mum is a dental hygenist (she would be soo ashamed - in fact she will be when the only dentist that might be able to fit me in is at the place she works! :shameonu: )

As a kid I was more terrified of my mum than the dentist, the words "don't you dare come crying to me for sympathy when your teeth are rotten..." ringing in my ears whenever she caught me eating something sweet! My dentist was actually quite pleasant and used to let us slide down the chair!

Must make an appointment - but perhaps I'll wait until after Christmas! :anxious:

Must say in all my years of teaching i have never, ever come across a child who has said they would like to be a dentist when they grow up

My daughter went through an admittedly brief phase of wanting to be a dentist, I have no idea what inspired it... probably got the idea that they earn mega bucks from somewhere. She now wants to be a lawyer, EU translator.... or a vet nurse  I think she'll change her mind a few more times before she leaves school though.

I have to say I'd rather be a dentist than a podiatrist  Give me teeth over feet any day :wink:
