noisy chickens - better if door left open? PLLEEEASE help

Recommended Posts

My girls have been noisy in the mornings and it's making me really nervous with neighbours.

I was thinking maybe leaving the door open and letting them come out in the morning when they want - would this make them more quieter?

My thinking is that maybe that want to get out which is why they are noisy?

Anyone done similar?

Getting worried about neighbours.

Hi,

I had a problem with the noise in the morning so I did this:-

3426511347_3aaf4078a7.jpg

I then covered the whole run completely in about 5 sheets but it took so long to put on at night I got a little fed up and they were getting wet through with all the rain we had. I now just put a blanket over the eglu and one sheet doubled over just on the first half of the run near the eglu. When I open up at 7.30ish their is a little gentle natter going on between themselves but nothing that the neighbours could hear - and they are VERY close.

Are you covering yours up at all?

My rotten crows make a right old din. Well one does and for five days she was quiet until today and then at it again at 6. I went down and she still stood shouting as she came down the ramp - WHY? Beats me, she hadn't laid an egg, wasn't waiting for the nest box. Just an exhibitionist. I'm too lazy to pile on all the covers. Neighbours are fine when I ask them and give them some more eggs. So have decided not to get wound up about it - until they have their windows open.

Someone posted about giving theirs pasta late in evening and then they were quiet. Might try that but sounds like making a rod for your back as then they will probably not go in. May just pop some ear muffs in with eggs for the neighbours. :D

I did try covering it up but it kept blowing away so tried weighing it down then when the wind blew it still blew the sides up and the light came into the cube from all the vents. Plus struggled to get something big enough and dark enough to cover the whole cube! Also ('ark at me moan-a-lot tonight!) when it rained my makeshift cube cover got soaked!

Need some sort of big black waterproof sheet!

This time last year I was paranoid about covering mine up at night. However, they haven't been as noisy this year and I haven't had to bother.

Since they have been in the walk in run with the solid roof, I haven't locked the cubes up at night, they roost outside on the branches or on top of the cube run and I haven't heard a peep out of them. Considering there are 21 hens in there, they are so contented.

Will try tonight leaving the cube door open enough for them to get out in the morning. I did this Friday night as we were away for the night, but of course I wasnt here in the morning to hear if they were quiet or not!

Only thing to think of now is do I leave the food in (normally take it out each night!) or still take it out or will then then squark and scream for food at 5am!

Oh just when I thought I had it all sussed!

Thanks

Michelle

Hi Mazzy C....we live in a built up area with five houses backing onto our garden and were having the same problems as you about a month ago........

Cube was uncovered.....door left open......cue squawking at 5.30!

Shut door, cube uncovered..........sqwaking at 6am! It was getting ridiculous as i was waking up earlier and earlier waiting for them to start. Then I would bolt downstairs to let them out and the only way to keep them quiet was to let them free range.

I now have a taurpaulin from B&Q (£4.95) doubled over and covering the cube, top, sides and back :D Door shut and i have just been out (7.30) to let them out and they were still snuggled up! They are also happy being in their walk in run now although this took a while and a fair bit of noise as they had gotten used to free ranging from 6am!

The taupalin is massive so I doubled it over to make it thicker and darker.....it is attached the the WIR using bungees and OH has used gaffa tape and some nifty folds to make it "cube" shaped :D It isn`t snug on the cube but rather tented so that there is airflow.

Remember sunrise is getting earlier and earlier so if the door is left open they will be up earlier and earlier.

Hi,

I had problems and  I've cracked it. I shut the door and lock it down so no argy bargy in the eglu can open it and they can get out, BUT the biggest difference is to cover the eglu and lock the door.

I checked once in brilliant sunlight what it was like in the eglu (my eglu is purple so I couldn't understand how light was getting in) but the grey at the bottom illuminates in the sun. If you cover that right down to the bottom of the grey, it makes a huge difference. We put a paving slab against the back so it didn't disrupt airflow and put the tarp over the back of it

I am the lightest sleeper in the universe and they don't even wake me now and they get up when I get up. The other day it was about 8:15 and I woke with a start (it was the weekend!) convinced I'd discover world war III and they were clucking quietly to themselves and not at all fed up.

The other thing it's done is stopped Lottie's egg annnouncing. This used to be as early as 7am but now I hear nothing. Not sure why, but she used to be so noisy!

Good luck in showing them who is head hen.

Lots of people have said the same - get a tarp to cover their house and run (leave the far end uncovered for airflow).

If you open the door, they'll come out earlier. We tried that once with our girls and a cat set off the outside light at 3am, and my girls came out and started feeding and squawking!!

Thanks all.

Left door open last night but dont know if they were noisy or not as we are in the front bedroom.

My son was up early so whether they woke him or not i dont know. We are back on by 4 houses plus ours is 5 so lots of people to potentially upset!

When I went down just after 7am I checked them and they were in the run but quiet and one was in the nest area (dont know why as no egg laid!).

Husband was in bathroom at the back early so he may of heard them, will ask him.

Will try and get some big dark tarp this week and some bungee (B&Q?) and give it a go.

I really dont want the neighbours complaining to me or worse some other powerful body who could take them away! Some neighbour once told the council we cut a bit of our walnut tree (that is protected).

My excellently behaved new girls have the past couple of days been clucking early hours but when I had a listen all the other wild life is at it too..we have some wild baby ducklings that I know go around the cube area and I have rescued a finch a few times that has gotten into the WIR (I think they are after any bits of feed???) plus lots of new fledglings ,,,,

I am guessing they can hear the commotion of the other birds and its setting them off??? just a possibility??

ps they were fine up until the last few days :)

Right so I just need to increase the no's to 21 :lol: and get a dark tarpaulin.

Don't want to gloat but they were quiet this morning. Hubby home yet Mazzy?

This is a great post!!! My girls are yelling at 5.45!!! They live under my neighbours window as mazzy know, so we are getting worried.

We were thinking about leaving the door open but foxy paid a visit last night, so we are not keen....

Palmer, have you got a pic of your tarp on your cube? would be great for ideas!

thanks..

Hope things are improving for you mazzy!

Michelle, I found that leaving my eglu door open 24/7 actually created a noise problem rather than solved it. 2 years ago, they would wake up at day break and were mostly quiet. But a cat in the garden spooked them and they all 4 started to alarm call at 4.30am... terrible racket, and when it happened a week later as well I decided enough was enough and now I always lock them in the eglu until 7.30am each day.

Have to say it is a bit of a pain and I would rather leave door open but my lot are quiet when locked inside and seem to have got used to the routine. So I need not darken the eglu with any other measures.

Hope you find a solution that works for you and your set up.

Oh no what to do!?

Was wondering if something like a large PVC tablecloth would work, something like this

I really dont know whather to lock them in til the morning and cover the cube and hope they are quiet or let them come out when they want as they could be squarking as want to get out.

Oh dear confusion!

This is so spooky!

I specifically came onto the site to have a moan and to get some advice about noisy chickens (0630hrs)

I had asked my neighbours either side and at the back if they were being a nuisance but all said a very polite no. They have been given eggs though, and we live in a very 'nice ' area where most neighbours don't complain!

BUT....... this evening there I was sat in my skimpy dressing gown when a neighbour 2 doors away came round and asked if we knew who had chickens!! her daughter is trying to do her A levels and is getting stressed out by the early morning wake up squawk!

I feel absolutely dreadful :(

Will shut them in tonight but they still squawk. Have to keep getting up earlier and earlier to try andd catch them though even when they are out and about one will squawk at some point.

Bit annoyed that Omlet websire never mentioned Chickens might have atendancy to squawk very loudly at 0600hrs every morning!

As it says in our deeds we're not supposed to have them I'm really worried now that we will have to say 'bye bye'

Another problem with the covering up thing is that i work nights sometimes so have to leave the door open sometimes :(

Shall i just give up? Our chickens have been a real nightmare since we've had them!

Sorry to moan but I feel really bad for all concerned.

The neighbour did say as they were our chickens she didn't mind too much, but thats not the point is it?!?

No no don't give up. Try the tactic of giving them pasta late evening and see if that keeps them settled longer. A dark cover over the eglu/cube and bit of the run may work whether the door is open or not. It's worth a try.

Could you suggest her daughter keeps her bedroom window closed? :(

Good point Plum! I forgot to add that I make sure the girls get a stodgy supper about an hour before bedtime. Normally it is pellet porridge sometimes leftover mash and veggies from our dinner. They go to bed with bulging crops and settle much earlier and also have a lay in too! :D

Another one having problems :(

Mine have always been really quiet and I've been leaving door open for last 5/6 months as so good.. however for the last 2 weeks they have been making an unearthly racket from about 5am each morning.. my cube os right under next doors window which they have been leaving open in the heat so really worried..

I've placed a large horse rug over the cude to make darker and started shutting the door again.. this worked for about 3 days then they started shouting loudly to be let out at 5.30!

Tried half shutting door so they can push out and still leaving rug on top which worked for a couple of days .. but now noisy again!

I'll try the pasts trick tomorrow as ready to try anything!

We've been shutting our girls in and covering the cube for nearly 2 years now with great success.

Routine is key, covering the cube and opening the door almost the same time every morning will get your hens used to it. We use a black plastic backed picnic rug.

Dont give up! Remember, you are the boss :shameonu::lol:

i leave the eglu door open so my hens can get up when they want too. the dawn chorus from the wild birds is really noisy around here and so are the planes going over. we live 15 minutes from an airport.I leave 2 grubs full of pellets for breakfast and then put treats in when i get up.They live in a WIR which is really a dog run so foxproof. i think in this hot weather to make them stay in would be cruel. They have siestas during the day I let them free range when I come home from work for about 3 hours, but they dont go to bed until it is dusk.
