Chook n Boo Mum
I've just had a gas man in to sort my leaking tank....long boring story, not going there!! However he has recently bought 6 fertile CHOCOLATE Orpington eggs from ebay, put in a silly bid £190 & got them....only one hatched though. He's now got to source a matching Orp so he can breed them! My jaw hit the ground when he said how much this one bird had cost him, then he added that he'd been offered a pair for £1000, so I suppose he's done ok with one for £190 ....provided it's mate is less than £800 of course!!!!! He's only had chooks for a year like me & got nearly 50 now, with lots of Orps...............am I , not at all, more like . DH hasn't come back to me to make any comment when I emailed to suggest we could up our numbers....... Sha x
Parsley
If you are after Chocolate Orpingtons then try http://www.archieslittlegems.co.uk. The owner Jason has been extremely helpful in my research on Araucanas and breeds these in LF size - lots of colours. He mentioned his Chocolate Orps in a recent e-mail (and gold laced) and I notice his website says he has just hatched some this month. He lives near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire and, although I have not managed it yet as I am in West Sussex, he seems more than willing to see visitors. Don't know what the price would be but he is very approachable - not like some breeders!
C&T
HOW much??? Wow, and I keep telling people it is the coup/run that costs the money, and not the chickens.... Makes the Cube look like a bargain!!
Chook n Boo Mum
Where abouts are you Parsley? I'm near Chichester. Maybe a day trip is in order.....not that I'm seriously planning to get anymore chooks at the mo........... Sha x ......and at £350 - £500 a bird for a chocolate orpie, I am definitely not in the market to buy one Sha x Edited June 26, 2009 by Guest
nigama
I would love some orpingtons, but have an eglu and a sussex breeder said that was too small for them . Interested to hear what you guys think?
atsw
I would love some orpingtons, but have an eglu and a sussex breeder said that was too small for them . Interested to hear what you guys think? Rubbish. I've got two Orps and a Red Hen, and they were quite happy in my Eglu and run. An extension to the basic run is probably in order if there's no free-range time, but apart from that, fine. Chook n Boo Mum
I knew several Omleteers had Orps in eglus, palmer07 had hers in an eglu until she upgraded to a cube & I was getting round to you Andrew! When I had Willow in solitary confinement in the she looked at it as though I had suggested she sleep in a matchbox, but ducked her head through the door & snuggled in fairly happily...I only say fairly because she was on her own & was used to being in with the "sisters" and the chooks. Not sure I'd have any more than 2 big girls in there though as they really are huge bundles of fluff & even with the double insulation I think they'd get a bit warm in the summer, a smaller girl or two would fit in with a little space between them all...just my thoughts, not proven fact etc !! BTW, DH has said a categorical NO to the chocolate orp...he says dip one of ours in Cadbury's if I'm that desperate for a choc one....one daft choc lab is enough chocolate creatures for any household Hey ho!!! The Dogmother
I've heard that they are extremely rare and pricey, but not seen one. I'd I'd spent that much on hatching eggs, I don't think I'd be happy with that conversion rate Gorgeous though....

Falkor
ooooh chocolate Orps.....my two favourite things in one lovely package!!! 'tis true I had my Orps in a but that is becuase they were meant to be mini's not LF I was cleaning the today and my two adult orps decided they wanted in and both plonked their fluffy masses into the tray....not much room left I think it is the height that is the issue.......and if my newbie Orp grows up like her mum and dad then AND...archieslittlegems is about five minutes from me! I sent a friend to him for aracuna hatching eggs. Just checked his website and they are hatching Choc orps NOW!!!!!
Parsley
Wild Mum - I'm right over the other side of West Sussex near Haywards Heath. Sorry for the delay in replying but we seem to have been adopted by a Cockatiel! Found him in the garden this morning and have been trying to catch him all day. He is very tame so obviously an escaped pet but, although I managed to stroke his chest, he has stayed just out of grasp..... He has fed and watered and has been named Eric and we are going to try to catch him when he roosts tonight as he has taken a liking to my cherry tree. The girls do not like my attention (as well as food) being diverted away from them though and liked it even less when he tried to join them! Back to Choccie Orps, the lady I got my Splash Orpington bantams from a few weeks ago is starting to breed chocolates minis from next year so I'm going to be very nice to her! Chook n Boo Mum
I can't afford to put that kind of money into eggs that may not make it to feathers though, especially as I'd become attached to the little blighters & not want to sell any that do get to adulthood ...oh for that elusive lottery win ! ross81
Looking at the amount of people on other forums who are getting in to breeding these it shouldn't be too long for them to become more available. If you just can hold off for about a year there will be alot more of these about and possibly at a normal orp price.
craftyhunnypie
We've been wanting some for a while now. Very pricey but beautiful. Emma.x
