Swine flu - omleteers update?

Recommended Posts

The secondary school across the Park from my primary school has it, but so far no one that my son or daughter knows has had it. We sent a member of staff sent home for the week on Monday as he has a weakened immune system with it being so close and so much transition with year 6 going on. I have been achey this afternoon and my stomach is doing somersaults but no cough or cold symptoms or even a temperature so maybe I am just overtired. Trying to stay away from DD as she has her Grade Vll flute exam tomorrow and I don't want her to miss it!!!!

One of my colleagues has been off all week and he phoned today to say that he had been to the doctors, and the doctor said "you've got flu, there's only one type of flu going around at the moment - you've got Swine flu!"

I was chatting to him and helping him on Friday evening! Eek! I'm not too worried, but of course I'll let you know if I do come down with it!

we've got swine flu & ordinary seasonal flu doing the rounds, tbh swine flu is a much milder version! at the moment we are only giving tamiflu to under 5s over 65s and any one with an unerlying disease, even asthmatic & diabetics whose condition has not been affected by the flu are not being treated. is a shame the media cannot get the message around that the panic is over, I suppose that does not sell papers  Even so swine flu is proper influenza and not a cold so maybe getting that message accross has made all of this worth it. One of our Drs has got real flu, felt he had something brewing yesterday drove to work this morning & by the time he got here could barely stand, now thats proper flu (not man flu  )

We had a letter from the DSs school to say they have 3 pupils recieving Tamiflu.

No panic in our house, we are all likely to be exposed at some point!

However I have heard a great deal of gossip from some parents and apparently one or two have been less than civil towards the staff at school about it - as if the Government advice to 'Keep Calm and Carry On' was their fault!:evil:

Well now I have a temp and achy limbs school want me to stay away. My GPs wouldnt talk to me and said phone NHS Direct, but they will only talk to people who are really ill (fair enough) so how do I know if I have swineflu or another virus?? I have no sore throat, runny nose or cough but do have a temperature, aches, chills and nausea. Anyone got any ideas????

My YD has had a sore throat and cough all week and has been under the weather. DS has been similar with a sore throat and runny nose but no cough and ED has had a sore throat and croaky voice for a few days. I am presuming that they have either a throat infection or a normal cold. YD is the only one who has been ill enough to stay off school for the past couple of days.

Has anyone heard from Raina? She posted that she had it this time last week, but I don't think that there have been any updates.

From what I hear, the symptoms are pretty much the same as with regular flu, but with the possible addition of a dodgy tum.

I am sure that one of the nurses on heer will correct me if I am misinformed, but my understanding is that the government is trying to limit the spread, but that it's no more dangerous than regular flu, except to those who are very old/young or have weakened immune systems.

None here yet so far as I know

Edit.. just spoken to one of our freelancers and he has had it confirmed and has been told to stay at home  I bet he's not happy - he is very busy at work hust now.

YD (16) is now well recovered from her swine flu diagnosed ten days ago. It's been through her school like wildfire. Most of her year had it - they had their prom night on a boat down the Thames, and someone had to be taken home early by their parents as they went down with it that night.

Anyway, she's fine, not 100% as her appetite's not fully back and she gets a bit tired, but otherwise right as rain.

If you have flu-like symptoms it's probably swine flu, is what our surgery's saying, as there's no other flu around at the moment. We were offered tamiflu, but as it only reduces the severity of the symptoms and decreases the length by a day, and can have side effects, we declined. There hasn't been time for long term studies, and it's a personal decision, but we felt it's better to let the body fight it using its own defences.

 Looks like they are going to start vaccinations now  .

We have a case in the Swimming club - and they posted various government links - there is info on how to manage community and hospital cases, with clear guidelines for adults and paediatrics. Worth looking at if you are concerned about anyone with severe symptoms as the virus is already resistant to some of the treatments and the antibiotics to be used are higher end broad spectrum. I find that sort of info useful as I would not want my child to be palmed off with in-effective treatment if we were unfortunate enough to have the virus to that degree of severity.

My son is now in his 3rd week of not feeling well (still think its swine flu). His girlfriend, who gave it to him, is on holiday but still not feeling well, her mum is trying to arrange a flight home for her. Son still has rotten cough, blocked up nose and no real appetite. :(

I FINALLY got to speak to my GP today! As I don't have the respitory problems (cough, sneezing, sore throat ,headache - two of) it is NOT swine flu, just one of a number of viruses doing the rounds. I still feel washed out and have lost weight in a few days but at least school will let me back now to finish my Y6 film before they leave on Friday!

email from my ED school today

We notified you last week that we had one suspected case of Swine Flu in school. This has now increased to two cases in Year 7, one possible and one probable, one in Year 8, two in Year 9 and one in Year 12. Of these only two have been prescribed Tamiflu. The first case has now returned to school. We will continue to keep you informed of further developments.

:shock::anxious:

My YD was ill for about 5 days with a cough and very sore throat, she didn't have headaches, but she was very tired. Who knows who has what anymore  The other 2 have had sore throats and coughs but not as bad so I am thinking that it is just one of the many un-named viruses

oh dear reading this thread makes me wonder if I have Swine Flu. I didnt give it a thought. I went to London 2 weeks ago for a couple of days, then 5 days after that got sore throat and catarry cough, felt I had a temp one evening but not otherwise. Have certainly had a couple of headaches and felt nasious at times, put it down to the cough. Here I am a week further on still feeling wrung out, coughing and wheezing at times. Sometimes I cough quite badly, then dont cough for hours so it cant be anything serious. I do wonder if I havent had or got this flu, should I call someone??

My three have had sore throats this weekend and their voices have gone a bit croaky, but apart from that they are okay. I have been feeling icky today, but that might be down to a bit too much vino over the weekend and not enough sleep. But seeing as there is no flu about now, but lots of other virus etc I'm sure thats what they have. Its just really worrying when it is so close to home.
