Guest
I got a call earlier this evening from someone claiming to be from the RAC, they asked for me and I said "speaking" then she said "to make sure I am speaking to the right person can you tell me the first line of your address" I said "YOU called me, you know you're thru to the right person" she then started banging on about data protection. I said I wasn't going to give her my address and she said "well i can't speak to you then" so I said "so, you've called me to tell me you can't speak to me???" then I hung up. WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am with the RAC and I know why they're calling, they want to know why i cancelled a DD with them but for goodness sake, what a stupid way to go about phoning a customer!!!!! I NEVER give ANY personal details over the phone, especially to someone who should have them on a computer screen in front of them!

crazygal
I've had a similar stupid phone call (they didn't say they were from the RAC though)- asked for me by name, then wanted to confim my address...they had obviously got my number from the phone book which has my address there so why would they need me to tell them?? In the end I just put the phone down cos they were annoying!

Thinking about it, how rude to phone at that time in the evening as well! They're obviously trained or scripted to come out with this garbage! Sheilaz
Yes, I've had that happen, a different company though. Monty Python sprang to my mind, it really was surreal. They didn't want to speak to me either, when I didn't want to tell them my address, yet they'd 'phoned me. That was probably in Corrie too. Valkyrie
We had a call similar a couple of months ago. I said I don't give personal details out over the phone and turned it off. Why do they want to confirm my phone details when they have just called me on the stupid phone? Another one wanted to speak to my husband and I asked what it was about. She was very rude and said she wanted to speak to my husband "NOW". I told her that I knew everything that my husband dealt with and she said "I wouldn't be so sure of that!" I slammed the phone down, cheeky wench! At that time we had a flurry of stocks and shares dealers begging us to take them on - not sure what with - is air currency? I could have swapped a few peas for pence I suppose.
Guest
....she wanted to speak to my husband "NOW". I told her that I knew everything that my husband dealt with and she said "I wouldn't be so sure of that!" ....? unbelievable!
Valkyrie
That was last year and I was so angry I was fuming for days, I mean, how dare she speak to me like that! I'm not sure whether she phoned back or whether it was another woman that called back a few days later - I thought the voice sounded the same so this time I was very smarmy from the outset - the way she mispronounced his name gave the game away somewhat (that's another reason why I knew OH was not playing an away game - he wouldn't dare anyway). I handed the phone to OH and he promptly said (as is the usual with such calls) "sorry not interested" and rang off. I do so wish that I was a fly on the wall then. Chucky Mama
I get that quite a lot, people phoning and asking me to confirm who I am. I say that it is my phone and so why should I confirm who I am! I then ask them to confirm who they are and ask them for the first line of their address and last 3 digits from their bank card. They then get all flustered and can't proceed. It has now become a bit of a sport. My children quite enjoy doing it to. When they ask if they are an adult, they get very indignant as say ' how dare you, I just have a high voice!' Sorry if any of you out there are cold callers!
Valkyrie
I think most calls are from abroad - we're with telepreferential, but they can't stop outsiders.
chocchick
We get callers asking for Mr [Chocchick] which is amusing as it is my surname and not OH's. You should see his face We only get calls from services we already have as careful not to tick the option about marketing when we sign up for something and registered with the telephone preference service. chelsea
I can't believe the cheek of these people! Good for you for being on the ball , why on earth would they call you and then ask your address?!? It's like these cold callers that come to the door for charities and these young lads ask for your bank details.....as if!!!
WitchHazel
We get those types of calls (where the caller wants us to confirm who we are) quite a lot. I never confirm anything. Recently I had a call from a very polite lady. As soon as she asked me to cinfirm, I explained (politely) that I wouldn't do that as I had not idea who she was. She said she was calling from (a very reputable) credit card company. I explained that I had no way of knowing that. She then went on to say, very ypolitely, that she completely understood. Her name was XX, and could I phone the number for Customer Services on the back of my credit card statement as they needed to talk to me urgently. I phoned the number on my statement, actually ended up back with her anyway, and I'm glad I was very polite. She was ringing to tell me they had spotted fraudulent activity on my account. So. I always refuse to give my details, but I'm always polite. And the genuine cases will always understand.
Cinnamon
I have had this happen numerous times , mostly from my bank, credit card company or building society. I generally tell them where they can shove their data protection, but on the one occassion I did not it was a call from my credit card people to tell me of some fraudulent activity on my card So now I do play along ,but wouldn't for anything less important than a bank or financial co I was involved with. chocchick
Smile has an automated system for fraudulent activity. I got a call saying "this is a call for Mr [OH]." I kept hanging up as it was an automated voice. I listened a few seconds longer one time and it said that it was from Smile and it was (genuine) advice when Oh spoke to them. stoice
The chap who sits next to me at work has a funny way of dealing with cold callers. Once he's determined it's no-one he needs to talk to he says 'one moment' and leaves his mobile on his desk. Still with the line open, still with the caller 'on hold' on the other end of the line. The record he's got so far was 7 minutes before they hung up. It's very funny!!!
Ain't Nobody Here
Reminds me of that advert for a Scottish brand of tea (I think it was) where the woman said "could you hold on please" then put a child's musical toy beside the receiver, coming back periodically to say "please hold, your call is very important to me" . Willow
I then ask them to confirm who they are and ask them for the first line of their address and last 3 digits from their bank card. Must remember to do that ! I find it really annoying when Banks ring up and ask us to provide personal details at the same time as urging us to be careful of our personal details to prevent fraud. I never proide details. A couple of years ago I was ordering several appliances from a store and somehow they needed my CC details again so a lady rang and got most indignant when I wouldn't provide the details. So (very nicely) asked her if she would provide her credit card details over the phone to someone who rang her up claiming to be from a store where she'd just spent a lot of money and she said 'Of course' in great surprise She just didn't get how easy it would be for someone to pick up a copy of a receipt and try it on ! I was trying to watch Corrie! Thinking about it, how rude to phone at that time in the evening as well! They're obviously trained or scripted to come out with this garbage! I'd have said "I'm trying to watch Corrie so can you get to the point!" Has anyone else been called by BT, offering them a credit card recently? I hate these unsolicited intrusions. Valkyrie
I wonder if their bosses know why there is a drop in sales for these particular women? I told OH about Chucky Mama asking for the address and last 3 digits - he said "good for her"! I think that may be adopted in this house too!
