Mrs Frugal
I couldn't be without everything in the house as I am the world's worst declutterer . I'd regret getting rid of most things even if they seemed trivial or worthless to most people and have never forgiven myself for having a radical clear out when we moved here. Charlottechicken
Ooh, how interesting! I remember seeing the 1900 House programme, where they said in 1900 each person had just 200 items, and 100 years later we each had 20,000. I could do 200 of most things quite easily (I imagine my shed has more than 200 items in it), but thankfully doing 'buy nothing new' last year knocked some of the consumerism out of me! (am still finding it hard to buy clothes from clothes shops ) I know what he means though, how much stuff do we really need or do we just want it? It does become quite stifling once you notice it all, and it is taking me years to declutter effectively. I might have to bookmark his blog, thanks for posting this Lesley! Couperwife
oh, no something else that I feel the need to get involved in I have "stuff" kevs calls it rubbish mum calls it clutter I could probably bin 100 items and not actually miss anything I am seriously considering having a go at this (the get rid of 100 items - rather than living with 100 items ) cathy x

lisaroo2
Hubbie and I de-cluttered our garage last week. There was stuff in there that we've not used for years so we didn't even think about it, we rang a local charity shop and they came and collected it all. A much tidier garage for us and some 'stock' for them!! The spare room is next up for de-cluttering and I can hear it shivering with anticipation
bigmommasally
DD2 is doing a boot sale today to try and get rid of some of our clutter and make some herself money, somehow though I think most of it will be coming back home with her and going straight down the charity shop! Other than the obvious family, pets etc. I couldn't live without my laptop, mobile phone, camera, sewing machine, my ever growing fabric stash oh and my lovely new wok! Happy chickens!
Love de-cluttering, but didn't realise was supposed to get rid of stuff - am addicted to storage, love box files, drawers, shelves, cupboards...... Guess I keep everything, except I do use my shredder for lot of stuff at least.
Olly
Gosh. This is quite pertinent, I've just returned from a weekend with my sister who hardly ever throws anything away! I found it quite frustrating, they have a lovely home but you can barely see it through the clutter. She can't bend down at the moment, she asked me to find one of her slippers at the back of the wardrobe, and there must have been 20 pairs of shoes, all nearly identical, stuffed in there! I'm not a saint but I realised a long time ago that Stuff can hold you back in life and I try not to keep too much. Couldn't cut down to 100 things, but I like the idea of throwing 100 things out! Car Sabatier kitchen knife iPod Hairdrier Cube and chickens! Garden shredder TomTom satnav mobile phone Duo leather boots memory-foam mattress topper ... those are the first 10 things that spring to mind, that I would be clinging on to kicking and screaming if you tried to take them away! Old Speckled Hen
Hey, I love the way that 35 pairs of shoes can be one item Can 10 black jackets be another? 25 white tee shirts yet another? If that's so then I could really enjoy this. I dream of minimalist heaven but my hubby would live in cluttered chintz hell I could throw out soooooooooooooo much of his stuff We rub along
bluekarin
I would keep Family and friends Pets photos my bed Ellie (toy elephant I've had since I was one) Moisteriser (face and body. This is my desert island one thing) Duo boots (I so agree with you on that one Olly) books pictures the kids have drawn since they were tiny (yes, I keep almost everything ) kids first shoes and clothes and their keepsake boxes (only special clothes, to pass on) two necklaces I chose and was given of my Grandmas things after she died. They are only glass, but she made them and they have poppers for the fasteners (she was Polish and 'made do' with everything, but and Incredible hoarder. She'd wipe the floor with all of us) passports new car (when we get it for Tuesday) wedding and engagement ring purse umm . . . . can't think of anything else right now
Lesley
As soon as I left for another day gardening, I remembered my memory foam topper - I definitely wouldn't want to do without that! ....and a big, squashy sofa - comfortable and big enough to strew with papers and books. I think I would be better getting rid of 100 items as well and am with the person who said they did declutter but were into storage.......I love storage - Staples is one of my favourite shops.....I hate shopping with a vengeance but will always pop into Staples to look at boxes and files Apparently, you can make a Memory Box and keep little bits in there and it counts as one item. Valkyrie
I'm very much like Kate, very torn between knowing I must get rid of things, but can't - just in case. My dad was exactly the same - all the totally useless bits of wood and nails, screws in little tins and boxes that filled up the garage. But if my son continues down the path he's treading at the moment - it will be him!
Bassett
I'm pretty good at decluttering and have fairly regular clear-outs. Much to the horror of my children who dread me going into their rooms with a big black rubbish sack! Some of the things I couldn't chuck out are: Dodo pad Kipling bag Kipling purse (the only purse that stays organised) Birkenstocks Wedding Ring My favourite Watch Photos My memory boxes for each child Ipod Mobile phone L'Oreal 6hr glam Shine Eyeliner Boots gorgeous foot cream Pedegg 12x mini mirror Denby dinner set Wedgewood dinner set Waterford glasses Emma bridgewater jugs/vases Piano My collection of cookery books Bicycle

carrie
Having had a major clearout today I have put some thought into this. Piano Grandma's wardrobes Grandma's display cabinet 1 litle tea cup (you guessed it-from my Grandma) A ring which used to belong to my Dad Laptop Chickens Woodburner Factor 50 suncream (I burn incredibly easily) My craft stuff
Valkyrie
My clothes are positively antique. I would never throw away that dreadful tunic that my grandmother crocheted. And my mum's skirt that she had when she was 18 (making it something like 62 years old now) is still in use. It was a gathered skirt to be worn with frilly petticoat - she was anorexic before they knew what anorexia was - she lived on an egg beat up in milk (it's ok with a teaspoon of sugar or a bit less). I do kind of appreciate the extra yardage. The clothes size 10 are a reminder of how I used to be before I go and stuff my face to comfort myself. Nope, it has to be the boy first.
